Sherlock Hibbs
HIBBS Hibbs, Sherlock age 98 of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. passed away on July 5, 2002 in Ft. Lauderdale. He was born February 28, 1904 to Emma Stuhlmiller Hibbs and William Evan Hibbs in Marengo, IA. Upon graduation from the University of Missouri, he entered employment with the Guaranty Company in New York City. In 1942, he entered the United States Navy, attaining the rank of Captain. He fought in the battles of North Africa, Sicily, Southern France, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, receiving the Silver Star and two Bronze Stars. After his honorable discharge, he resumed his career on Wall Street and became Managing Partner of Kidder, Peabody & Company. He retired to his Ft. Lauderdale home in 1974. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Taylor Hibbs and his sister, Wilma Hibbs Sikkenga. He is survived by a niece, Sarah Sherlock Simon of Mabank, TX. and a nephew, William Jay Sikkenga of Ann Arbor, MI. Funeral services were held on Sunday at Forestlawn Central Cemetery. I wish I knew him better. My mom was very fond of her Uncle. He was a great man.

My mother, Helen Poe, mentioned Sherlock Hibbs, a number of times. I am sorry to hear of his death. I remember going to Marengo to see the Hibbs family when I was a very little girl. Sympathy to his niece and nephew.
