Sylvia Schaefer Obituary

The Diabetes Research Institute and Foundation are deeply saddened over the passing of Sylvia Schaefer, wife of Rowland Schaefer, founder and former chairman, CEO and president of Pembroke Pines, FL-based Claire's Stores, Inc. Sylvia, together with Rowland, was one of the organization's most longstanding and generous donors. Over the last 40 years, they have been devoted benefactors of the DRI and Foundation. In recognition of their generosity, the Diabetes Research Institute building at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine bears their name. Among her many areas of involvement with the organization, Sylvia was a member of the Love and Hope Committee and the couple served as Life Trustees of Love and Hope, in addition to other leadership positions over the years. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Rowland; DRI Foundation Long Island Region Board Members Roberta and Bruce Waller, who also serves on the DRIF National Board of Directors, and their children, Dara Kriss Melnick (Jeremy), Andrew Kriss and Skylor Waller; Marla Schaefer (Steve Weisshof) and daughters Danielle and Nicole; Bonnie Schaefer (Jamie), and the entire Schaefer family.
