John R. VanWinkle, 69, of Fort Smith, Arkansas passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2021 in a local hospital. He was born on December 18, 1951 in Lexington, Kentucky to John and Kate (Morris) VanWinkle. He was a graduate of the University Of Arkansas School Of Law and a practicing attorney for many years.
Clinton appointed John to a family judge position in Fort Smith. He was active in both local and state politics for a long time helping Senator's Bumpers and Pryor as well as Clinton in all of his races. He was encouraged to run for the third district congressional seat, where there was a vacancy. He won the democratic nomination but was barely defeated by his republican counterpart. He was an avid golfer and loved animals specifically dogs and cats.
He was predeceased by his mother and father, John and Kate VanWinkle and his stepson Gabe Gammons. He is survived by his stepdaughter Ginny Gammons Perlman, her husband Lee, and two granddaughter's Reese and Evie all of Denver, Colorado. He is also survived by his friend and colleague, Edwin "Win" Dooly and many cousins and dear friends.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
