Thurman was a lifetime member and past president of the Arkansas Audubon Society and a lifetime member of the American Legion, Post #31. He was a recipient of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Habitat Conservation Award, both flora and fauna. Thurman served four times as a silver-haired legislator. He was a member of the Marvin Altman fitness center for more than 20 years. Thurman was a long time faithful member of the Noon Exchange Club, where he received the first ever Eagle Award for outstanding community service. He attended First United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Builders Sunday School Class.
Thurman was preceded in death his parents; his first wife, who was the mother of his children, Lois Wilkinson; his second wife, Molly Smith Jordan; two sisters, Arwelia Davison and Anita McGrath; one brother, Don Jordan and one grandson, David Jordan.

Thurman was born near where my own mother was born, near Magazine in Logan County, and their birth years weren’t very far apart. Like my Dad, Thurman enlisted in the WW2 Navy and then made a career of it. In the 1980s, Thurman Jordan worked as a volunteer in efforts directed by Doug James to survey commercial pine forests in southeast Arkansas for endangered Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. It was hot, sweaty, tick-filled, with lots of hacking through underbrush with machetes. Thurman thrived on it. Later, in 1990s, he was a valuable worker representing our Audubon interests as the Ouachita NF worked out a new RCW strategy in cooperation with a variety of stakeholders. This led to establishment of the Pine-bluestem project. Those of you who have gone birding on Buffalo Road south of Waldron – for RCWs, Bachman’s Sparrows, Prairie Warblers, Brown-headed Nuthatches, and Diana fritillaries – walk in his shoes.
