Ruth VanCleave

1934 - 2026

Ruth Marion VanCleave, 91, of Salem, Va., passed away on February 5, 2026.

Born on February 17, 1934, in Maple Ridge, Mich., Ruth moved with her parents, Lowell A. Voorhees and Beatrice Maude (McClung), and her brothers, Robert, Ronald, Russell, and Richard to Staunton, Va., in the late 1950s. It was there she met her husband, Norris E. VanCleave. After living in several states together, they eventually made their home in Copper Hill, Va.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and siblings; her husband; her daughter, Naomi Ruth VanCleave; and her grandson, Justin VanCleave. She is survived by her daughter, Benita Rae VanCleave of Salem, Va.; her son, Barry L. VanCleave (Sheree); and grandchildren, Zachary, Brenden, and Joshua of Oxford, Pa. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Ruth worked at Woolworth's at Tower's Mall and later at Hardee's. A woman of deep faith and dedication to service, she was actively involved in church life-teaching Sunday School and playing piano or organ for services well into her eighties. She remained a devoted supporter of missionary work throughout her life. Ruth also served as a 4-H leader and enjoyed reading, crocheting, and word puzzles.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 15, from 3 to 6 p.m., at Oakey's South Chapel. The funeral service will take place Monday, February 16, at 11 a.m., also at Oakey's South Chapel, with Pastor Rodney Spears of Brentwood Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Restvale Cemetery in Copper Hill, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Brentwood Baptist Church Mission Fund or the Sandra Smith Music Scholarship Fund for Floyd County High School students.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Good Samaritan Hospice and Friendship North for their compassionate care. Special appreciation goes to Emilio Zaga for his dedicated service.
