Dr. Arthur Angelo Vercillo August 19, 2021 Dr. Arthur Angelo Vercillo died peacefully on August 19, 2021. He was 97 years old, in good health, active and lived independently until the time of his passing. Arthur was born in Syracuse, NY on May 25, 1924. His parents, Peter Vercillo and Angela Sposato Vercillo, emigrated from Calabria, Italy in 1911 at the insistence of his maternal grandfather so that Angela and her family could achieve the American dream. Arthur worked incredibly hard beginning in early childhood to overcome many obstacles to get himself out of poverty. His mother recognized his academic talents and work ethic from a very young age and was one of his biggest influences. Arthur graduated as the valedictorian of his high school class in 1942 and was the first in his family to go to college. He received his medical degree, after working straight through his undergraduate degree, from Syracuse University's College of Medicine as the class salutatorian just five years later in 1947, cum laude. Arthur completed his residency in surgery at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY in 1952. Following his surgery residency, Arthur was assigned to the Navajo Hopi Native American Hospital in Ft. Defiance, AZ where he worked as the Chief of Surgery to complete his Public Health Service requirement. Once completed, he returned to Syracuse, NY and established his own surgical practice and was later joined by his son which was one of his greatest joys. He also became the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital. Among Arthur's academic appointments, he was a Clinical Professor of Surgery at Upstate Medical Center and both a Professor of Surgery and a Professor Emeritus of Surgery at Syracuse University. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the past president of the Upstate New York Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgeons. Arthur was the recipient of many medical and academic awards, but one of the awards that meant the most to him was receiving the Hyde Teaching Award by his surgical residents at Upstate Medical Center for being the Best Teacher of the Year. This was a great honor as this aligned with his passion and love of teaching many residents throughout his career. Arthur was a highly respected surgeon within the medical community throughout the Central New York area and practiced until the age of 75. He is truly an example of what one can accomplish through hard work and persistence and instilled these values into his family. Despite all his medical and academic accomplishments and long career, Arthur was most proud of his family. He and Dr. Margaret Fitzgerald Sheridan Vercillo, his beloved wife, raised five children together, Susan Duprey, Jean Vercillo, Dr. Arthur P. Vercillo (Melissa), Nancy Dietrich (John), and Mary Beth Vercillo. He was also the loving and devoted grandfather to nine grandchildren, Meg, Tally, Charlie, Sheridan, Grace, Lilli, Thaddeus, Sam and Luke, and great-grandfather to five great-grandchildren, Ali, Wesley, Norah, Mikey and George. Arthur was predeceased by Margaret after more than 65 years of marriage. She was a fellow physician and the love of his life. Arthur took his extensive medical and surgical knowledge and shared it through several lectures he held for his good friends and residents at Devonshire in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, where he resided during his later years. He enjoyed spending time with his family in FL and traveling to Napa, CA and Dallas, TX. Arthur gave so much of himself to others and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. Please sign the guestbook at syracuse.com/obits

I was very fortunate to have worked with Art for so many years in the operating room at St. Joe´s. He was, hands down, the best surgeon. He and Margaret became family friends and enjoyed many memories with both. He always talked of his children and grand children. He was so very proud of all. Rest In Peace my friend.

Dr. Vercillo operated on me in the summer of1982 and I remember being so honored to have the Chairman of the Department doing my surgery. He closed the opening so well I have no scar on my neck and no issues since. I have often thought of his fine workmanship and how blessed I was to find him.

As an attending anesthesiologist @ St. Joe´s, I worked with Art for years until he retired. This man and all of his underlings, who were taught by him, essentially made my job easy because he/they never produced an unexpected, untoward, iatrogenic, negative outcome. His skill level was most supreme and I was honored to have been his OR colleague. Rest In Peace, you certainly deserve it
