For Patty
Elizabeth "Patty" Fedele was my cousin twice removed, but in the final chapter of my mother´s life, she became something much more-a partner in a promise, a keeper of family history, and a quiet force of love.
I didn´t know Patty well-until this promise led me to her.
Before my mom passed, she asked me to do one thing: don´t give up on bringing Uncle Jim home. Master Sergeant James B. Collins, her great uncle, died as a prisoner of war in the Philippines. His remains were never identified. That promise became my mission.
I did know my mom had already reached out to Patty-James´s niece-and asked her to contribute DNA to help with the identification. Patty said yes. She gave midcoronal DNA, the kind they needed. It was a quiet act of courage and love, and it became the foundation of everything that followed.
When I first called Patty, she was in rehabilitation and hadn´t even heard that my mom had passed. I was a stranger to her, reaching out with grief, hope, and a story that connected us. And she welcomed me with warmth and grace. That conversation was the beginning of something unexpected and beautiful.
She´s gone now, and I miss her deeply. But her legacy lives on-not just in the children and grandchildren she adored, or the community she served so tirelessly-but in the quiet, powerful way she helped bring our family´s story full circle.
Thank you,
Patty. For your courage, your kindness, and your heart. I´ll carry your memory with me as I keep the promise, we both believed in.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. Patrick, I met your mom on your first day setting up your classroom at Cicero Elementary, and I thought what a wonderful mom she was, coming to help her son out on his first job as a classroom teacher. I think of you often and know that cute little girl is now a stunning young lady.
