Alice Drescher Obituary
Alice Drescher left this world peacefully on April 5, 2014.
Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1918, Alice Marie Frances Doolan spent her childhood in a country setting in Hasbrouk Heights, New Jersey with her younger sister Winifred, father John and stepmother Esther, her mother having died when she was 4 years old. As a young woman, Alice studied to be a teacher at Juniata College in Pennsylvania then went on to earn her B.S. degree as a Registered Nurse from King's County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. While a nursing student, she was introduced by a friend to the dashing engineer student at CCNY, William Drescher, who she married in 1941. This first encounter with her husband-to-be was on a winter day in Brooklyn on a tennis court flooded for ice skating.
In addition to being a nurse, Alice Drescher was quite talented in the world of textiles. She was a weaver, quilter, and master of many needlecrafts, making many beautiful creations for her family which we all treasure to this day. She was also a master gardener. She passed these talents to her daughters who became gardeners and artists in their own right.
Alice's marriage to 'Bill' lasted 72 years until he died in 2012 at 94. She became his hospice nurse in his last years and was ever his biggest fan.
Together they had three daughters: Arlene Wilson of Nashville, Tennessee, Linda Lee of Tallahassee, Florida, and Bonnie Hume, deceased. Alice adored her six grandchildren: Henry Wilson of Lynchburg, Virginia, Courtney Carpenter and Andrea Brock of St Louis, Missouri, Jennifer Chapman of Tallahassee, Florida, Megan Vlach of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, and Mollie Jackson of Longmont, Colorado, plus six great grandchildren. She loved and cared for many grand-dogs and pets as well.
A reception to honor her memory was held on Tuesday, April 8 in the chapel at Allegro/Heritage Oaks, 4501 Shannon Lakes Drive, Tallahassee, Florida
Donations in her honor can be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, Florida 32308.
