Elder Leonard Hughes

Elder Leonard Hughes, 88, passed away on Thursday August 13, 2015 at Miracle Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

The funeral service will be Monday, August 24th at 11:00 a.m. at Greater Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church, with burial at Clifford Hill Cemetery. Public viewing will be Sunday, August 23rd from Noon to 5:00 p.m. at Strong and Jones Funeral Home.

He was a native of Tallahassee, born to the late John P. and Viola Hughes, on September 12, 1926.

He was joined in holy matrimony with Necie Brim on June 23, 1946. They had three sons and a daughter. In the late 1950s, the family moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico where they lived for over 23 years and he worked as a pipe fitter for Los Alamos County. The family returned to Tallahassee in 1981. In later years, he became an Associate Minister at Greater Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church under the pastorage of Elder Clinton H. Smith.

His son, Cornell Hughes, and two sisters, Pearl Barnes and Lucille Hall, preceded him in death.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 69 years, Necie Hughes; two sons, Robert S. Hughes of Las Vegas, Nevada and Morris L. Hughes of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one daughter, Brenda L. Hughes of Tallahassee, Florida; one brother Joe Hughes of New York, New York; three sisters, Isabella Green of New York, New York, Charlie Mae Floyd of Los Angeles, California and Hazella Andrews (Clifton) of Thomasville, Georgia; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Allen and Bernice Powe both of Tallahassee, Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
