Herbert Jones Obituary

Herbert W. Jones Herbert W. Jones, 75, a Florida A&M University physics professor, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002. The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. EDT today at Culley's MeadowWood Memorial Park. Strong & Jones Funeral Home in Tallahassee (224-2139) is handling arrangements. Dr. Jones was born Jan. 31, 1927, to the union of the late John and Ada V. Jones in Chicago. He served in the Navy during World War II. He received a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1949 at the University of Illinois; a master's degree in physics in 1950; and a Ph.D. in physics at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1959. While at the University of Michigan, he met and married Gladys Hurt of Waycross, Ga. To their union was born Brenda E. Jones, an associate professor of chemical medicine at the University of Southern California. One of his greatest accomplishments was receiving the National Millennium Award for excellence in teaching and research by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi Honorary Societies and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He was also a member of the NAACP and The Urban League of Tallahassee. He was a professor of physics at FAMU for 43 years. Throughout his career, he made an impact on the lives of young scientists. He co-authored two books and more than 50 articles in leading physics and scientific journals. He obtained millions of dollars in grants for the school in the areas of physics and natural sciences. He leaves to cherish his memories a daughter, Brenda Jones of California; two sisters, Bernice Jackson and Evelyn Young of Chicago; two nieces, Phyllis Jones (and husband William) of Chicago and Gloria Penny of St. Etienne de Cuines, France; two nephews, John C. Jones III of Boston, Mass., and Harry Jones (and wife Lemonia) of Jonesboro, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Sarah R. Gray of Albany, Ga.; two grand nephews, William Jones IV of Chicago and Ryan Freeman Jones of Jonesboro; a grand niece, Michelle M. Jones, a foreign service officer, of Jakarta, Indonesia; and many cousins, friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Hurt Jones, and brother, John C. Jones.

Dr. Jones was special to me, He helped me realize the importance of hard work in the field of Physics. When I was a sophomore in his Mechanics class, it opened my eyes to my deficiencies and made me strive harder to better myself.

I particularly liked his personna when it came to academics, he would just be straightforward and truthful in approaching you about your shortcomings and I more than anything appreciated that
