John Dunkle Obituary

John R. Dunkle Sr., Ph.D. John Robert Dunkle Sr., Ph.D., died Sunday, May 22, 2005, in Tucson, Arizona. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. MST Friday at the St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church, 4625 E. River Road, Tucson. Burial will occur in Gainesville, Fla. at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Florida Foundation Inc., 2012 W. University Ave., P.O. Box 14425, Gainesville, FL 32604, designated to the John and Fawn Dunkle Undergraduate Geography Scholarship Award, or to the Casa de la Luz Hospice Inpatient Unit, 5830 N. Fountains Ave., Building No. 2, Tucson, AZ 85704. Desert Sunset Funeral Home, 3081 W. Orange Grove Road, Tucson (520-297-9007), is handling arrangements. He was born June 30, 1924, in Jacksonville, Fla. He served as a weather observer in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He graduated from the University of Florida, the University of California at Los Angeles and Clark University. Dr. Dunkle was professor of geography at the University of Florida for 46 years and held the rank of professor emeritus after he retired. He and Dr. Erwin Raisz wrote the first statistical atlas of Florida. He painted and sculpted throughout his life. He was a Methodist and the brother, son and grandson of Methodist ministers. He is survived by his son, Dr. John Robert Dunkle Jr. (and wife Nancy Nobles-Dunkle) of Marianna; his daughter, Dr. Lillian Fawn Mills (and husband Dr. James Patrick Mills) of Tucson; and two grandsons, John George Sabochick and Robert Richard Sabochick, both of Tucson. Dr. Dunkle was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Fawn Trawick Dunkle; two sisters, Margaret Dunkle Hardy and Mary Dunkle Ferguson; and a brother, the Rev. Dr. William Frederick Dunkle Jr.
