Katherine Ashton Obituary

Katherine Porter Fite Ashton Katherine Porter Fite Ashton, age 89, died on Friday, June 17, 2009, at Heritage Health Care Center. A memorial service will be held at Culley's MeadowWood Chapel, 700 Timberlane Rd., 2 p.m. EDT Tuesday, June 23, 2009, followed by a reception for family and friends. Born in Quitman, Ga., in 1920, Katherine grew up in Perry, Fla., and graduated with highest honors in her high school class. She moved to Tallahassee in 1938, and while employed at Moon's Jewelry Co. she met and married Roy Fite in l939. She subsequently devoted her life to her family and took great pride in raising her four children. She was also a long-time member of Saint Paul's United Methodist Church, and was an active member of the Tallahassee Women's Club, the Elkettes, and the Tallahassee Garden Club. She also served as an officer in the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs. Her husband, Roy Fite died in 1973, and in 1976, she married her high-school classmate, Elmer Ashton, with whom she shared a busy and happy life until his death in 2001. Katherine is survived by her four children, Van Roy Fite, and Jon Embry Fite of Tallahassee, David Porter Fite (wife, Sarah) of Alexandria, Va., and Katherine Virginia Fite, of Hadley, Mass.; her sister, Virginia Rounds, of Tallahassee; and three grandchildren, Earl Roy Fite, Eliza Kate Fite, and David George Fite; and niece, Anita Durham of Tallahassee. Katherine Ashton was a founding and devoted member of the Holly Circle of the Garden Club and was particularly interested in supporting environmental education. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Katherine Ashton SEEK Scholarship Fund via the Tallahassee Garden Club, 508 N. Calhoun Street, Tallahassee, FL 32301, (850)224-3371.
