Maura Binkley

Tallahassee - Maura Binkley, age 21, beloved daughter, sister and faithful friend, lost her life in a senseless act of violence in a yoga studio in Tallahassee, Florida on November 2, 2018. Maura had a kind and gentle spirit, was endlessly loyal, fearless and profoundly devoted to those she loved. She is survived by her father, Jeff, mother, Margaret, brother, Sean, grandmother, Margaret, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, all of whom she loved dearly.

She was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1997. She attended Austin Elementary, Peachtree Middle School and graduated from Dunwoody High School in 2015. In high school, she was co-editor of the school yearbook and a member of the Varsity Cheerleading Squad. She was fluent in German, participated as a German Exchange student, studied in Nuremberg and welcomed German students into her home. She was a former Girl Scout and a lifelong member of St. James United Methodist Church.

Maura received an academic scholarship and attended Florida State University, where she was a fourth-generation legacy. She was a senior with a double major in German and Editing, Writing and Media. Maura was a member of the Alpha Eta Chapter of Delta Delta Delta where she served in numerous leadership roles and was currently serving as the Vice President of Chapter Development. This past spring, she received the Winthrop King Scholarship from the Department of Modern Languages at FSU, which enabled her to study for four months at the University of Wuppertal in Germany and travel throughout Europe. At the time of her death, she was participating in ongoing interviews for a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship or to work for Teach for America.

Maura's loving and gracious spirit blesses us all. A celebration of Maura's life will be held on Sunday, November 25, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., at St. James United Methodist Church, 4400 Peachtree-Dunwoody Road, Atlanta, GA.

Dear Margaret, Jeff and Sean,
The last time we saw Maura she had just returned from her studies and adventures in Europe and was headed to FSU for Senior year. Noah and I spent the day with the family - playing and generally catching up. Maura told great stories of her travels with passion and enthusiasm. She also spoke of her plans for the future including graduate school.
She was proud of her accomplishments and her path in a humble sort of way that just made her light up with excitement - always shown by the big smile and sparkle in her eyes.
She was a very special person and will be missed by so many!

I got to know Maura in Wuppertal and we became friends. We even talked about meeting each other in Atlanta or Tallahassee as I am currently living in Charleston, South Carolina.
It's a huge shock for me and everybody who had the luck to have known her. She was such a good person, always happy and nice to everybody. She even helped me studying for an exam.

I got to know Maura at the very end of her studies at the University of Wuppertal. One evening, when we were having a barbecue, we talked so much about different countries we traveled to, about her future plans and teaching each other German/English. I met Maura at the Stein-Dunwoody exchange program 5 years ago.
When I came back to visit Dunwoody this summer we hang out together.
The loss of such a wonderful and kind person breaks my heart into two pieces. A always positive, happy, smiling and kind friend just passed away by senseless violence!!
