Melynda Reid Obituary

Melynda Reid Melynda Reid, 58, a Tallahassee artist, died July 8, 2010. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, July 13 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 2198 N. Meridian Rd, Tallahassee. See paleo.org/memorial for updates. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Second Harvest of the Big Bend (fightinghunger.org or 110 Four Points Way, Tallahassee, FL 32305), or to your preferred organization related to Melynda's ambitions (see below). Born in Knoxville, TN, Melynda Claire Flatt grew up in Ithaca, NY, Silver Spring, MD, Aberdeen, Scotland, and Athens, GA, and studied at the University of Georgia, Eckerd College, and FSU. After a wedding in Gainesville, FL in 1972, she lived the rest of her life in the Tallahassee area. Her death was caused by a pulmonary embolism that occurred on June 20, following a long debility from bipolar disorder. Her greatest ambitions were for her art work to be remembered when she was gone, to bring joy to others, for people to treat one another with the same respect and gentleness she always tried to show to them, and to protect the flowers, pets, and wild places that she loved. She worked to protect the flowers that she drew in the Apalachicola National Forest, and to protect the nearby communities as well. She also served for two years as president of the Leon County Food Coop, now New Leaf Market. She is survived by her husband of almost 38 years, Edward Reid; her father, William P. Flatt of Athens GA;a sister, Katherine Hutto of Suwanee GA; a niece, Abbie Leigh Hutto Smith; and a nephew, William Hutto. She was predeceased by her mother, June Nesbitt Flatt. Her ashes will be spread on land that she loved. Fairchild Funeral Home, (850) 386-8686, is handling the arrangements.

Dr Flatt, Kathy, and family I don't know, I just learned of your loss from my family in Athens. I am so sorry for your loss. I have many great memories of growing up across Broomsedge Trail from her and visiting your home frequently in our high school and college years to play the latest hit albums. Although we grew up and each left Athens behind I think of you all, and Melynda in particular, every time I pass your home when I'm back in town to visit my parents. God Bless you in this time and give you peace.

Edward, our love and thoughts are with you as they have been since Melynda became ill. I'm so glad I was able to spend a little time with her at Hospice House before she passed. I will always cherish the many cards with her artwork that she sent me over the years.

Dear Bill, my sincere condolences for the passing of your daughter. I did not have the pleasure of knowing her, but since the genes came from two great persons, I have no doubt that she was an outstanding individual. Gilles

Melynda was always an inspiration to others, and an unwavering source of creativity and support for causes and people she believed in. Knowing and working closely with her for just 2 years some 26 years ago before moving to Atlanta, she is someone I have always thought about, and long wondered how she was doing. I am so sorrowed to hear of her passing, and my sincere condolences go out to her family and friends.

I was very suprised to hear about Melynda's death. I have not seen or heard from her in about 30 years, but she was a part of a time that was very important for me. It was a time of which I'm certain we had many happy memories in common. We were both once a part of a group of people that called themselves Asylum Theatre, an association which, I'm sure, has always been a source of pride for both of us as well as those few others who claim it.
