Rivers Henderson Buford, Jr. died January 3, 2016 surrounded by his family at Big Bend Hospice. He was born at home at 416 North Calhoun Street on June 14, 1927. Growing up he loved music of all kinds and learned many song lyrics that he sang to entertain friends. While at Leon High School he worked as an usher at the State and Florida Theaters and as a soda jerk at Fein's Drug Store serving flavored soda water at the fountain.
Rivers enlisted in the Army Air corps Reserve, July 17, 1944 and received an Honorable Discharge May 14, 1945 upon discontinuation of the Aviation Cadet program. He enlisted Active Duty in the Navy 1945-46 and enlisted inactive, Naval Reserve 1947-52. He was Commissioned in the Naval Reserve 1957 – June 14, 1987 retiring with the rank of Commander.
Rivers joined the Kappa Alpha Fraternity at The University of Florida on August 5, 1947 and received his Bachelor of Laws Degree July 22, 1950. He was a proud and loyal Florida Gator football fan.

He was a member of the Florida Bar since 1950 and served as a President of the Tallahassee Bar Association. He received his 50 Year Silver Dish in Boca Raton, Florida in 2000. Appointed Judge, then elected, Leon County Claims Court 1952-56; General Counsel to the Florida Board of Education 1969-72; Senior Attorney, Department of Transportation 1987-90; Assistant Attorney General 1966-69; 1985-87; 1990-03.
Rivers was active in Tallahassee Little Theater as both actor and board member. He appeared in God's Favorite and The Oldest Living Graduate and many more productions. He also made television commercials and a movie with the FSU film school. Rivers enjoyed ""messing about"" with classic and outboard motors and boats. With membership in the Florida Chapter of AOMCI for many years he exhibited at and visited boat shows at Mt. Dora, FL and Clayton, NY.

Rivers, an only child, was predeceased by his parents: Justice and Mrs. Rivers H Buford, Sr.: Justice Buford served as a Representative in the Florida Legislature; and as The Attorney General of the State of Florida. He retired as Justice of the Florida Supreme Court after 20+ years and serving twice as Chief Justice. Mrs. Buford (Mary Hollingsworth) had a long career retiring as head of the Speech and Drama Department at Florida State College for Women (FSU).

Huckaby), all of Tallahassee and daughter Margaret Ann Buford Finnell of Winter Park, Florida. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Kathryn Elizabeth Buford of Tallahassee, Taylor, Amanda and Spencer Finnell, all of Winter Park, Florida.

Rivers was ordained and installed a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Tallahassee on January 2, 1955. He became a member of St John's Episcopal Church in the 1970's, and at that altar, in ceremony by then Rector Lee Graham, Jr., he and Barbara were married almost 40 years ago. Rivers worshipped and attended regularly Wednesday chapel noon day healing service; Sunday 8 o'clock church service; followed by round table Bible study and discussion in Alfriend Hall. His contributions were witty, brief Bufordisms. He loved this church group where he deepened his spiritual faith and learned from and highly regarded each member.

The Department of Business and Professional Regulations presented Rivers with a plaque in appreciation of his dedicated service to the Board of Pilot Commissioners and the Citizens of the State of Florida for the years 2003 through 2010. He enjoyed this work and working with these fine men and women. During these later years he was appointed to serve as a Commissioner on the Board. This work would lead Rivers into retirement. Traveling to and visiting almost all of the ports of call from Nova Scotia & New York in the northeast down the east coast to Miami, through the Panama Canal, and up the west coast San Diego, to Astoria, Seattle and Alaska and back again to many. He went by rickshaw, taxi, town car, cruise line, bus, train, or plane always, and everywhere keeping company with the very Best People On Earth.

This is extremely late but just heard of Rivers' passing.

I came to know him and Barbara while working in the AG's Office. He was one of the nicest, funniest and most interesting people I have worked with. He had broad legal experience and was a credit to the Florida Bar and to Government Lawyers in general. My condolences to Barbara and the family. She is pretty special too.

More than 25 years after having been received in Barabara and Rivers' house as a foreign exchange student, my memories are still fresh. Rivers was a man full of generosity that opened his house to a stranger, supported him and remained as a friend for decades to follow. Rivers was a contributor to making me discover the wonders of Florida and a continued attraction to the USA and it's lovely people. I will always consider him and Barbara as my "American family". Accompanied by my wife Carmen, I hope that he will rest in peace with a spiritual feeling of having counted to many in this world as well as making many happy. Barbara, you were always an exceptional spouse and remember that you will always have your family from the other side of the ocean, close to you. Continue being the strong, loving and caring person we always knew and whereas there is a huge gap to fill, remember that you are loved and that Rivers would not have wanted you to be sad. I learned a lot from Rivers and will always keep his memory close to my heart. Love Frank and Carmen Gibone.

My husband Dan and I send this note of sympathy in the passing of Rivers, your dad, grandad, great-granddad, uncle, and friend to many. My connection to Rivers was many years ago in 1956 when I graduated from Leon High School and became employed by Ervin and Buford when they were on the 6th floor of the Midyette-Moore Bldg. I was 18 and went to work there as Rivers secretary. He had just turned 29 when I started there and I worked until March of 1957 at which time I got married to my husband Dan (59 yrs. of marriage coming up March 16) and we went to Ft. Huachuca, Ariz. as he was in the U.S. Army. It was a pleasure working for Rivers as he was so very nice and funny too and so helpful as this was my first full time job. I will treasure those times and have shared that experience many times. Thought the family might like these good memories and may God bless you all, Gail (Harrison) McCall

It has been my pleasure to have known Rivers for only three years but I will miss him dearly. He brought joy to my Monday mornings with his "Bufordisims" and his smile. I not only consider my self a caregiver but a friend to him and Barbara. I will forever keep you in my prayers Rivers.

Barbara, I am so very sorry. I only heard today (from our old neighbor Sharma) too late to attend the memorial. I know how beloved Rivers was always and will always remember the many times he helped me with so many different things, and seeing him act at the Little Theater. When I think back I have so many Rivers memories that make me smile. I will be in touch soon. Love and prayers.

Rivers,
I'm sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. While I never had the pleasure of knowing him, I did have the pleasure of working with you and I now see where you got all of your fine attributes from. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time.

My deepest sympathies and prayers to the family. I have many fond memories hanging with my friend Laurie, her mom Barbara & Rivers. One that stands out-was a winter holiday break in the mountains around Natahla. We brought back some orphan puppies and Rivers fed them milk in a baby bottle for weeks. Rivers you were loved and will be missed.

Yes, they broke the mold with Rivers. Heaven is blessed with Rivers showing up there. It will never be the same.

Thank you, Rivers, for all the good times.

I was so saddened to hear of Rivers' passing. I worked with him at the Tort Bureau of the Attorney General's Office. He was a wonderful man and attorney, loved and respected by all, known especially for his never-ending witticisms.

When I started working for the Attorney General's Office in '86, Rivers introduced himself. We shared quite a few moments of hilarity. I'll miss him. He did not care how high up the ladder of success you were, he would still speak to you if he knew you. For a meager secretary, that always made me feel important. I'll have a Mass said for him and your family.

I worked for Rivers when I began my career with the Attorney General's office. He was my first boss and one of the kindest men I have ever known. My heartfelt sympathy to all of his family.
