Ruby Vickers Obituary

Ruby Louise Butler Vickers Ruby Louise Butler Vickers, 86, of Tallahassee, went home to be with the Lord on June 14, 2010 after a long illness. Born June 20, 1923 in Calvary, Ga., Mrs. Vickers and her husband, Earl, moved to Tallahassee in the late 1940s. Mrs. Vickers was retired from the State of Florida and was a member of Woodrun Baptist Church. She was also a longtime member of Lakeview Baptist Church, where she was well-known for her wonderful cooking. She showed her love through food, especially baking. Her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren could always count on her to have homemade cookies in the cookie jar. In addition to her husband of 66 years, she is survived by two children, daughter Linda Vickers, son Johnny (Carol) Vickers; four grandchildren Rick Maxwell (Debbie), Christie Register, Rachel Vickers (Steve), and Luke Vickers (Robyne); four great-grandchildren; and her sister Frances Shepard. Her much loved great-grandson, Michael, greeted her in heaven, along with her mother, Ethel Eugenia Butler, brothers Arthur, Tom, Lee and Raymond Butler, and sister Ethelene "Jill" Clary. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Bend Bend Hospice in appreciation for the comfort and support they provided to her and her family in her final days. The family also wishes to thank the staff at St. Augustine Plantation for their compassion and care. Visitation will be at Beggs Funeral Home Apalachee Parkway Chapel (850-942-2929) today, June 16th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. EDT with the service immediately following. A private burial will be held at Memory Gardens.

Mr. Vickers, Linda and Johnny: I was saddened to read that your wife and Mother passed away. Mr. Vickers, I thought of you and Ruby often. It's so easy to "get out of touch" in this busy world. Ruby was one of the sweetest, most caring person I've ever known -- I shall always remember that smile of hers! Mr. Vickers, Bannie and I always enjoyed being around you and Ruby, having gotten to know you at Lakeview Baptist and Johnson's Auto Parts many years ago. May God fill the void in all your lives as you take one day at a time.

I met Mr. and Mrs. Vickers when I was a teenager at Lakeview Baptist Church. Mrs. Vickers was a wonderful Christian example to me and my best friend, Connie Miller Hudson. I have many happy memories of those times as a young person and will always cherish the memories of those adults, Mr. and Mrs. Cox, Mr. and Mrs. Roop, Mr. and Mrs. Park Miller, and Mr. and Mrs. Vickers who actively worked with the young people and set Christian examples which would follow our lives until today. It was a true privilege for me to be able to fix her hair for the service and my prayers are with the family tonight. Belinda Doster Wheeler, Tallahassee.

Johnny and Linda,
Aunt Ruby will always be a very special person in my heart. She was a great sister to my daddy and was more like a sister than a sister-in-law to mama. She and Uncle Earl were always there for us after daddy died and never failed to visit mama in the nursing home and always have encouragement for me when mama started getting weaker. I always knew she was there for me. I will cherish her memory and know that she has now received the ultimate gift. Happy re-birthday, Aunt Ruby.
Love, Sandy
