William Gill Obituary
William E. Gill William E. Gill, 85, died April 30, 2010, after a long illness in Tallahassee, Fla. He was born November 25, 1924, in Grand Rapids, Mich., to Nella Wagemaker Gill and Gaylord C. Gill. He graduated from the Ashberry College of Liberal Arts of Depauw University in 1948 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science. He served in the United States Army from 1950-1952 and the army reserves from 1952 until 1956, reaching the rank of corporal. He was a member of the American Legion. He started his work career at Wagemaker Boat Company in Grand Rapids, Mich., but he spent most of his career in the printing industry. He worked for several years as Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Wheeler-Van Label Company. He retired from Hagerstown Bookbinding and Printing (HBP) in Hagerstown, MD, in 2005 after almost 20 years as sales and marketing manager there. He was a member of the Printing Industries of America. He loved breeding and showing dogs, particularly Labrador Retrievers and, earlier in his life, German Shorthair Pointers. He also loved fishing, hunting, good food, and reading mystery novels. He is remembered fondly for his quick wit and sharp mind. Proud of his nickname "Grumpy" he lightened the days of many a coworker, nurse, physician, and medical student who crossed his path, as well as his family and friends, with his humor. He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Martin Gill of Portales, N.M.; his daughter, Katherine Gill, of Houston, TX; his stepdaughter, Marian Schalk of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and his stepson, Paul Robinson (wife, Susan) of Tallahassee, Fla. He also is survived by 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 2 nieces, and 2 nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; his mother; his brother, Gaylord Gill; and his wife, Barbara Bauman Gill. A memorial service is planned for the summer in Berkeley Springs, W.V.
