William Lacy Matthews, Jr.

William Lacy Matthews, Jr., 84, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2013. Bill was born April 3, 1929 in Funston, Georgia to William and Hester Matthews. He moved with his family to Tallahassee, Florida in 1932.

Though born with the challenges of Cerebral Palsy, he lived his life with determination and resolve. For many years, he delivered the Tallahassee Democrat to the offices of the Capitol, Senate, and House of Representatives buildings. Senator Mallory E. Horne, recognized Bill's work ethic and recommended him for a job with the Legislature. He worked as a Clerk-Messenger for the House of Representatives for 23 years retiring in 1992.

Bill had a passion for electronics and one of his proudest days was when he became a licensed Ham Radio operator. He loved his cats and never let a stray cat go hungry.

Bill was a member of Faith Baptist Church where he affirmed his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Bill is survived by his sister, Jean Plonowski of Thomasville, Georgia; his sister Bessie Butler and brother-in-law, Joe M. Butler of Quincy, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Corine and James Tomberlin; his sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Lewis Murphy; and his brother-in-law, Al Plonowski.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, November 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Bevis Funeral Home Chapel, 2710 North Monroe Street, Tallahassee, Florida, 32303. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will immediately follow at Tallahassee Memory Gardens.
