WARNER, Albert Lyman Jr. 87, passed away after an extended illness on November 30, 2023 at home in St Petersburg, Florida with his wife and family by his side. Lyman was born May 9, 1936 in Washington, D.C. to Albert Lyman Warner Sr and Harriet Rowe Warner. He graduated from St Albans School and attended Amherst College where he was known for his intelligence, sense of humor, collegiate dress style, love of sports and his leadership as the Class President. After graduating from Amherst with a BA in English in 1958, he received a MA in Education from George Washington University. Lyman started teaching English at Landon School in Bethesda, MD and J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church, VA. Because so many of his students received a score of five on the Advanced Placement English Test, the College Board AP Program hired him as a consultant. In 1967, the Ford Foundation awarded him a grant for an internship in educational leadership. In 1970, Lyman became Principal of Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington, DC. His work there was recognized in a feature article in McCall's Magazine describing his success in developing a harmonious, integrated school. If you visit Alice Deal School today, you will find a floor to ceiling oil portrait of Lyman displayed in the main lobby. From 1974 through 1996, he enjoyed administrative roles in the Huntington (LI), Elmira (NY), Addison (NY) and Phelps-Clifton Springs (NY) School Districts. When he arrived in Phelps-Clifton Springs as Superintendent of Schools, the enrollment in the AP Biology and AP Chemistry courses had 30 boys to only three girls. Within four years, he made all the changes needed so the gender ratio was 50% boys to 50% girls. As the father of four girls, he took great pride in this accomplishment. Lyman often said, "I loved from childhood to old age my family cottage, my boat and Seneca Lake." He wants to be remembered for his love of his wife and family, his ability to have fun, his many friends, his interests in politics, newspapers, the evening news, NPR, The Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Rays, his dogs, squash, tennis, fine dining, travel and cars. Up until the end, he was asking for a new, red sports car convertible.
