I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Coach Carlmon Jones...I extend my sincerest condolences to his family...In July of 1970, legendary Florida A&M Coach Jake Gaither invited me to his home in Tallahassee and introduced me to Carlmon....Coach Gaither felt that Carlmon was the right young man who had the intelligence, temperament and strength of character to step into a very difficult racially charged situation...Coach Gaither was absolutely right...I never returned to the football team so I didn´t have the pleasure of being coached by Coach Jones but I have been told that he was a "players" coach with tremendous coaching potential....Coach Jones became the first Black coach in the history of Syracuse University Athletics and on a national level SU became one of the very first Division 1 College Football programs to have an integrated coaching staff...Historically, Carlmon Jones´ coaching tenure at Syracuse meant more and was bigger than just football...And also, I just discovered that he earned a Master´s degree in Education while at Syracuse...
Job well done on all fronts Coach!!....Rest In Peace!!

Carlmon was great guy. I was on 1972 team when Carlmon was new assistant coach. I have great memories from that time and his visits to reunions later. He praised Ben a million times for the job opportunity ands his Masters from SU. Rip. Roger Praetorius

Very sorry to hear of Carlmon´s passing. My sympathy to pam and the family. Carlman was a terrific person and a man of utmost integrity. He came to Syracuse in the summer of 1970 as a young assistant football coach and as Syracuse University´s First Black Coach in any sport. Jake Gaither, legendary coach at Florida A&M, highly recommended Carlmon to Coach Schwartzwalder. Carlmon, knowingly, came into a very difficult situation which he handled with dignity, class and maturity well beyond his years.
.
In 2008, Carlmon, along with two former Black players from the 1970 team Robin Griffin and Ron Page, traveled back to Syracuse to accept the Zunic Award presented by the Syracuse Football Club for their courage and willingness to stand up for their principles in the face of adversity.

May he rest in peace. Forever Orange!

Carlmon Jones was an enthusiastic Graduate Assistant Football Coach at Syracuse University. Carlmon´s demeanor was contagious as he gave 100% on and off the football field.

My deepest condolences to the Jones family. May your memories bring you peace and comfort at this difficult time. Though I never had the privilege of working with Carlmon Sr, I worked with his son and heard many wonderful stories.
