DEMBER, Charles H. 83, of San Antonio, Florida passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Florida on Saturday, November 6, 2021. After graduating from St. John's University, he received a Masters in Finance from Rutgers University. Charles enjoyed a successful career as a commercial banker and financial officer. He resided in Jackson and Freehold, New Jersey before moving to Chesapeake, Virginia. He then retired in San Antonio, Florida 17 years ago. As a longtime resident of Tampa Bay Golf & Country Club, Charles served as the president of the Home Owners Association for his community Deer Hollow. My first memories of my cousin Charles and our families go way back to our get togethers at 111 Freeman Street, Charles' boyhood home. Fun and laughter was abundant, sending decibel levels above the norm. Kielbasa and pierogi also comes to mind.

The first wedding I remember was Barbara and Charles. Barbara was so beautiful and Charles so
handsome. It was truly a fairy tale and one that never ended.

As older adults we reconnected and stayed in touch. He loved to talk about his children and grand kids and how proud he was of each and every one. He also ensured his mom was always well cared for.

Charles was bright, warm hearted, gracious and fun. His smile was contagious. He will be missed
by many....forever.

I have only known Charlie Chuck for a short time. I will miss our conversations sitting my garage trying to solve all the world's problems. A kind gentle soul he was.

We are all sad about the passing of Charles (Dad) He was a very special part of my life and my children’s life. I have so many great memories of him (wiffle ball in the front yard in freehold, walking in Greenpoint ,lunch at the Battlefield country club ,family fun run in Turkey Swamp Park, but my fondest memories of him is when he lived with us during the transition from New Jersey to Virginia . I loved that special time with him the most meaningful time are those times not going on elaborate trips for me it’s the little things in life . He loved my children deeply and I will be forever grateful . He had such a special bond with them. He will always be their stinky winky. I am sad for all ,he was a loving husband to Barbara(Mom) ,the guiding light for Sue,John and Greg. His favorite role was he loved being grandpa to John Charles ,Savanna,Jazlyn,Cole ,Justin and Machalyn .(They loved making loud chewing noises just to get that sigh and look from him)We will all miss him we all have nice memories to help us get through our grief for such a huge loss to our family . I love you all .

Charles was my father-in-law, but for 34 years I don’t think that I have ever called him anything other than dad. I looked to him as I did with my own father, for guidance and support. In return, he gave love, advice and time. Our “father/daughter” date to The Chrysler Museum and the symphony, where we shared a love of art and music is something that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. I was so proud to get dressed up and spend that time with him. The hours that he spent quietly holding his sleeping grandchildren on his shoulder is something we can only tell them about. They knew the gentle man with an easy laugh, who lead our family through love and commitment.

Dad, giving of yourself to family, friends, and neighbors personified who you are. Countless hours playing, working or just listening enriched us all. You taught us all that family is the most precious thing in life and you leave behind a very close family that cherishes every minute we had with you. You will be sorely missed, but know these lessons will never be forgotten. Someday we will get to play football and pinochle together again. Love you! Greg

Charles was my grandfather, my role model, and my favorite, most challenging chess opponent. His life was inspirational, and his memory continues in the family name he shared with all of us. He leaves behind a community he cherished and served dutifully, and family who loves and misses him every day.

I love you, Grandpa.

My Uncle Charles always seemed to me as a gentle giant. My best memories were from Freehold where many times he would play with us in the pool, hide and seek or just throughing a ball. We were always wanting more and more, but when he had enough, he would always retire to his chair in the den to find some peace from all the kids running around.

He always had an expressionate face that showed his mood, not good for playing poker, but still one of my favorite characteristics of him, along with his voice clear, deep and always confident. I will miss him. But both Charles, and you will always be a part of me with some of my most cherished memories as a child.

Love your nephew, Kevin.

At times like these its hard to say something soothing to the soul. I find the scriptures to be comforting because you can always go back them for comfort, Going to God in prayer helps too. Just call on him especially by name & he will answer you. God will never fail you. Please accept my deepest condolences of your loss.

I came to know Charles Dember over the past 18+ years through his daughter, Susan Loren. Susan is my neighbor and dear friend. I've talked with Charles over time but know him best through Susan. She has always loved, admired and spoken so highly of her dad. You could always tell those feelings were mutual by simply watching their interactions. I am sure he always loved and adored his girl but I know he was so very proud of the woman she became. That, of course, he had a lot to do with shaping her life and I'm sure that of his sons, John and Greg as well. Just to watch the closeness of the family that Charles and Barbara created speaks volumes.
I've watched Susan's dedication to her parents especially over the last few years. I know this time spent with both of them is and will be very precious in the years to come.
Charles' business accomplishments are wonderful but by far his biggest life accomplishment is the family that he and Barbara created. His love and devotion to his wife and family is his legacy.
Barbara, Susan, John, Greg and extended family, Scott and I offer our deepest sympathy for your loss. You have been and are in our thoughts and prayers. We love you!

Charles, you were always like a second father to me. I cherish the Civil War trip we took through Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas and the in betweens. We liked many of the same books and always had very interesting conversations. Thanks for loving the books I wrote, it meant a lot to me. I love you very much, will miss you the rest of my life, and never forget you and your lovely wife. Go Redskins!

You are my grandfather by title but our family has proven over and over again we’re more than what this world is by titles. You are my grandfather by love, for more than comfort of what your bloodline is to me. You’re a true gentleman, one they talk about in fairy tales. You looked over your wife as if she was the treasure you won during your young life. For that, I know what magical true love looks like thanks to you. I saw the way you admire her in silence and the pride you saw in the legacy of a family you built. You will not go silently in the night,
Your absence is loud but at the same time deafening. Those who know you agree, you are a glimpse of light ‘they’ talk about. Something that could shine in the dark. And a light of yours I’ll see again when it’s my time, and you’re still that light for us who need it. I love you, I promise to be annoyed at the small noises but appreciate the goodness that exists in the world. I’ll think of you on surprise and I’ll think of you on purpose. Life will be the next phase and in memory you will still be part of it. I love you, your first granddaughter.

Grandpa,

I’ll always cherish every lesson you taught me, and I’m thankful of all of your memories you were able to share with me. I loved all our talks we had when on my drives home from work, and I wish we could’ve had many more. You were, and will continue to be, one of my greatest role models. We will meet again one day, but until then I know you’ll be with me in spirit. I love you.

Dear Grandpa, I am so luck to have had you as a mentor the past 24 years of my life. It feels weird knowing our conversations have come to an end. I know you are still with me and we will meet again one day, I love you.

Charles was and will always be my closest friend and confidant. He was also the most honorable man I've ever known; the world has lost a "one of kind" person. Charles Dember will be missed by all that knew him. His Family was His Life.

Dad, I will always be grateful for the wonderful father you were. I especially appreciated our father/daughter dates when we traveled to NYC to visit art museums and have special luncheons in fancy places. You were very dedicated to your children never missing events we participated in. You taught us to have fun and play whether it was baseball, hide-n-seek or chess. You taught us the appreciation of arts, music, travel and the importance of good sportsmanship. You led our family with pride and joy and by example in supporting charities and teaching us to be smart about our financial obligations and investments.
I will miss you always, your loving daughter, Susan
