David Taylor Obituary

TAYLOR, Maj. David G. Jr., operations officer for 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry, 1st Armor Division, was killed in action October 22, 2006, in Baghdad, when a improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near his vehicle. Maj. Taylor was born August 11, 1969, at Fort Hood, Texas. During his father's second tour in Vietnam, he moved with his mother to his grandparent's farm in Apex, N.C. Although he spent most of his childhood in Heidelberg, Germany, he always considered Apex his home. Maj. Taylor began a life of service and leadership at an early age. At the age of 13, he was awarded the Eagle Scout, the highest Boy Scout award. Maj. Taylor was senior class president at Heidelberg High School, from which he graduated in 1987. He went on to Davidson College in Davidson, N.C., where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 1991. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry upon graduation. Maj. Taylor's first assignment was with the 82nd Airborne Division's 4th Battalion, 325 Airborne Infantry Regiment, at Fort Bragg, N.C. There he served as a rifle platoon leader, mortar platoon leader and battalion administration officer (S1). While with the 82nd Airborne, Maj. Taylor deployed as part of the multinational observer force in Sinai, Egypt, and to Miami, Fla., for Hurricane Andrew relief. Upon graduation from the Infantry Advanced Course, Maj. Taylor served at Fort Benning, Ga., as the executive officer of the Combined Arms Tactics Division of the U.S. Army Infantry School, battalion operations officer (S3) of 29th Infantry Regiment, assistant operations officer (S3) for 1st Brigade 3rd Infantry Division, and commander of C Company, 1st Battalion 30th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division. Maj. Taylor spent seven months in 2001-2002 leading C Company on a peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. Upon return from Kosovo, Maj. Taylor married Michelle Thresher of Tampa. Maj. Taylor's next assignment was as Operations Plans and Training Officer at Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Monroe, Va. In 2005, the Taylors moved to Germany, where Maj. Taylor worked in the V CORPS Operations section (G3). In January 2006, V CORPS deployed to Iraq, where Maj. Taylor served as a battle major, a shift leader for the day-to-day operations of the tactical operation's center for Multinational Forces Iraq (MNF-I). Maj. Taylor was blessed to have mid-tour leave when Mrs. Taylor gave birth to their son, Jake. Upon return from mid-tour leave, Maj. Taylor was reassigned to the 2-6 Infantry Battalion as the operations officer (S3). Among Maj. Taylor's military awards and decorations are the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Kosovo Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Multi-national Observer Medal, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Expert Infantryman's Badge, the Senior Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge and the Ranger Tab. Maj. Taylor was a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Command and General Staff College, and earned a master's degree in public management from Troy State University. He is survived by his wife, Michelle; son, Jake; parents, David and Kay; brother, John; and grandmother, Doris Overman. Funeral details are available from Apex Funeral Home at (919) 362-8233 or online at www.apexfuneral.com. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you thank a military service member, fire fighter or police officer for their contributions to their community and nation.

Though it has been many years, you are not forgotten. I knew you through your wonderful German Shepherd Dog, Baloo. You were always kind and cheerful when you would bring him to see us. Prayers for your family continue, especially during the holidays. And many times, when I have struggled, I have thought of your words, "Never quit on the uphill." Thank you for your inspiration, service, and ultimate sacrifice.

I found this interview of you about your combat experience in Panama.

CPT David Taylor was my company commander at Fort Benning. I think about the times I was one of his platoon leaders every Memorial Day. Gone but never forgotten.

It's amazing how small the world is and how people are touched by others. I knew David, as Cpt Taylor (I was one of his platoon sergeants in Kosovo). I did not know of his passing until now. I am glad he had a wife and son to love, I know he loved his parents and had a passion for helping others (helped him pass toys and favors to many kids in Kosovo). God bless his memory and his family ...

My deepest sympathy...I served with Dave and think of him often when I remember my time in Iraq. I know that he was absolutely psyched over the new baby (at the time) and was a proud papa/husband. Again...my heartfelt wishes to you and your son.

Hi, Dave - -
We never met in life, but I feel I know you because of all the great things I have heard about you from your friends and by meeting your parents, brother, and wife. You are also my jogging buddy ... at least when the going gets rough. As I believe you know because I have sensed your presence on several occasions, I have run the Army Ten Miler four times to honor you. The last time was yesterday. I again wore on my back the sign our friend Susan Schoeppler made that indicates I was running in your memory and to "Never quit on the uphill." Several people asked about you again this year as they ran past me. And, as I think you saw, I didn't quit on the uphill or any other time and I know your words have kept others from quitting on the uphill as well. At 64 I'm not a fast runner, but I always push myself to go a bit faster, run a bit harder to honor you and who you are/were. And like always when the going got rough and I sought your assistance, you gave it to me. At about mile 6 1/2 I said "Dave, I need your help. Be with me." It was then that I felt a moment of cool breeze on my back. I knew I wasn't running alone; it made me smile and press on. Thank you for making my path easier and for being an inspiration in my life.

Dave,
I remember when I met you, I remember your dry humor and how it made all of us laugh, I remember how you always had a moment for others even when you were busy, I remember your joy in being able to go home to see the birth of your son, I remember your excitement when you got your S-3 job and moved to Falcon, I remember hearing the announcement of your passing and the sorrow that was felt by all your brothers in arms, It has been a few years since your departure but I still remember... always.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know David, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

It's a privilege, albeit a sad one, to sign the memorial page for this fine and decent American soldier.
Everything that has been written about David Taylor tells me that he was a fine husband, father, son and brother and more; everything written by his friends confirms that he was a good and constant friend in return; and everything written by his comrades in arms makes it clear that he was a good soldier, a true leader and a compassionate person.
The eulogy written by his brother John is both heartwarming and infomative, showing as it does that he had a great sense of humor - and wasn't a man to take himself too seriously - just the sort of man you'd like to have as a friend. I hope that the months since his passing have brought some peace to his loved ones; that they have been comforted and surrounded by love and support and that they have the opportunity to share their treasured memories with one another.
Rest in Peace Major David Taylor.
May God bless you, your family and your Country.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

My thoughts and prayers are with all of the members of David Taylor's family. I went to Heidelberg High School with David and he was always such an inspiration to those who came in contact with him. As a fellow Army soldier I appreciate his military service and how dedicated he was to serving his country. He was an extrodinary man and will be missed be everyone. May you rest in peace Dave!

My name is Cpl Brian Taylor. I was the driver of the Humvee Major Taylor lost his life in. I first want to send my sympathies to his family. Major Taylor was an amazing man and officer. On days when I was in a bad mood he'd always try and cheer me up. His jokes weren't always the best, well they were actually terrible and he knew it. But that's what would help to make me laugh a little. To Major Taylor, I'm sorry there was nothing I could do to save you. I'm so sorry myself, your soldiers, your family, and your friends had to lose you. I will miss you and you will forever be in my thoughts, my prayers, and my heart. I hope someday to meet you again on the other side because the time I knew you was too little. Rest in peace.

It was through the magic of the internet that I knew David Taylor. This medium allows one to know a person more deeply than any passing acquaintance. We played a game there together and one could not but be touched by his wit, his wisdom and his kindness. There was never a day he didn't make me laugh with a pun or joke. For years afterwards we spoke on instant message and David told me of his involvement with coaching soccer. He loved children and wanted to give them all he had to offer. When my grandson was born, we spoke often and he told me how he loved the name Jacob, but I should call him Jake...a man's name! So tragic that he should finally get his Jake and then be lost. I hope that Jake grows up in his father's image. Kind, gentle, loving with a quick wit and a deep wisdom that belied his years. I'll miss seeing 'dargolyt' on aim and I will never forget David Taylor. Rest in Peace.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the Family and Friends of David,
It is with a heavy heart that I again sign the guestbook of a fallen warrior; a true hero, father, friend, leader, and brother in arms. I knew David from our time at Ft Leavenworth and CGSC. He attended my small civil wedding in my living room and we talked about our futures in the Army. I will miss him greatly and call upon him to guide me and my Troopers when I am again called into the fray. May God Bless and Comfort Those Who Love the Heroes That Have Gone Before Us.

Dave has been a great friend for 17 yrs. I am grateful for an opportunity to visit in person a month ago shortly after I arrived in Baghdad for my own deployment as a Combat Support Hospital surgeon. Our country has suffered a great loss with Dave's passing, and I hope and pray that we here at the CSH can help save a few others who might have suffered the same fate.

Thank you Dave, for being a wonderful friend, like a brother, for always making the day more pleasant, and for offering your life for our country. We will miss you terribly.

My husband served with David in Iraq. He called me very upset when David was killed. He said he was a wonderful friend and great officer. Our prayers are with you.

I am Deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Maj. David G. Taylor.
The price this young hero and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.
May David rest safely in the Loving Care of God and may the Peace of the Lord be with the Taylor family.
There will never be enough ways to humbly thank these heroes for their Supreme Sacrifice, my brother among them. KIA~Vietnam, 1967.

Hoping you can feel the thoughts of caring and support that surround you today and in the days ahead, as this Country mourns with you, for someone very precious to you, who is a Hero to all of us.

May your memories of David, live in your heart always.
Softly and slowly....
Time heals...

To the Family of Maj. David G. Taylor:
If your child can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 as well and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for right now. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten . You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
