Donald McFARLAND Obituary

McFARLAND, Donald O.

a lifelong resident of Clearwater, passed away at home on June 17, 2017 at the age of 86. Don was born at Morton Plant Hospital in 1930, graduated from Clearwater High School in 1948, received his AA from St. Petersburg Junior College in 1950 and then enlisted in the US Army. When he was discharged he attended the University of Florida on the GI Bill where he was a member of Phi Alpha Delta and graduated with his BSBA in 1955 and Juris Doctor 1958. He served on the Clearwater Marine Advisory Committee, The Clearwater Code Enforcement Revision Task Force and the Civil Service Board. He was the City of Clearwater Treasurer in 1963, the Town Attorney for Indian Rocks Beach 1969-71, the President of the Clearwater Kiwanis in 1967 and Co-Founder of Clearwater for Youth. Don was the senior partner at McFarland, Gould, Lyons, Sullivan and Hogan PA where he practiced law for the last 60 years. He was a member of John Marshall, American Bar Association and The Florida Bar. He was an avid fisherman and boater and on any given day or hour you could find him on the water; we're pretty sure he had salt water running through his veins. He is survived by his four children, Georgette Renshaw of Memphis, Laura McFarland of Bradenton, Bruce McFarland of California and Kelli Umstead of Madeira Beach; nine grandchildren, Kristen, Michael, Adam, Kimberly, Madeline, Heather, Matthew, Teddy and Flynn; eight great-grandchildren; and many beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Sara E. McFarland. The Family will be receiving friends at the house for a Celebration of Life on Saturday July 1, Noon - 4pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Clearwater for Youth; www.ClearwaterForYouth.com. For information contact www.community-cremation.com

To Don's family, please accept my deepest sympathy. Although I haven't seen him in many years, I've thought of him often and always fondly. I have wonderful memories of great times with him and Sarah so many years ago. Don was MOST DEFINITELY an unforgettable man. May he rest in peace.

I met Mr McFARLAND years ago while working at a nursery. He would come in his overalls and old truck look at plants awhile and then we would talk. There was something special about this man! There also was a man well dressed in a nice car equally as nice and kind that would frequent the nursery. We'd talk and one day he gave me his business card. Well he came in the truck one day. I was always happy to see him as he was a JOY to talk to. WELL it just dawned on me that I had one friend and not two as this was the same man.I laughed to myself then told him my story. We both laughed as this went on for quite awhile. I thought I had two friends but you're the same guy. He smiled and was very gracious about the blunder. He was a Pleasure and a Joy to see and talk to. I will never forget him! REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND REST IN PEACE!
