Heather Rose "Peaches" Gills

Heather Gills Obituary

Gills, Heather Rose "Peaches"

was born on August 22, 1940, in Folkston, GA, and passed away on October 8, 2025, in Tampa, FL.

Heather grew up surrounded by a large family in the small town of Folkston. Her mother, Maggie, owned a local general store and dress shop where Heather worked during the summers. She loved playing basketball and was on her high school dance team, where she spun the fire baton. She also competed in beauty contests, winning titles such as Miss Bubbles and Miss Southern Georgia, and placing third in the Miss Georgia competition.

Heather attended Brenau College, where she earned her B.S. degree in Biology and Secondary Education. She was president of the Alpha Delta Pi national sorority. While in college, she visited Myrtle Beach with her roommate, Valerie Osteen, and met the love of her life, Jimmy Gills. Two weeks after graduation, they were married and moved to Durham, NC. While in Durham, she taught science at Durham Academy.

Heather and Jim shared many hobbies together, including snow skiing, waterskiing, and tennis. They welcomed their first child, Shea, in 1966, and later moved to Clearwater, FL where, in 1970, their second child, Pit, was born. While raising her children, Heather attended Norma Neal Gause's Bible study. After 23 years of participation, she became the Teaching Director of Community Bible Study for seven years.

Heather's passion for serving the Lord led her on many mission trips and ultimately to partnering with International Cooperating Ministries.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jimmy Gills; her daughter, Shea, (husband, Shane Grundy) and their four children, Maggie, Braddock, Jimmy, and Lilly; her son, Pit,(wife, Joy Gills) and their three children, Pitzer (Maddie), Parker, and Stokes; and her brother, Ben Rogers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to International Cooperating Ministries (icm.org).

A light in the darkness, Heather was the shining star at midnight, that every young girl dreams of becoming. What a true inspiration she has been to all of us. There are a handful of people you meet along your “path”, that leave a lasting impact on your heart - Heather was that “angel”. We will reunite one day. God bless !

Sending my deepest sympathy to Jim, the entire family, and Heather´s many friends. What a wonderful gift it was to live next door and become friends with such a wise, warm, kind, sincere, spiritual, loving woman. What a lady! She wore her faith with quiet dignity and you knew she was very special. My heart is saddened that I will not see her again here on earth. But what comfort to envision her at peace in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior.

So many memories of a lovely family ... Heather's wisdom and influence along with encouragement and a listening ear brought great enrichment to our lives. She is now embarking upon a new journey of joy, peace, and indescribable realities of eternity. As believers in Christ, "we will see her later."

Shea, Dr. Gills,
I was so sorry to hear this sad news the other day about Heather. Please accept my deepest condolences and I pray for your healing in these difficult times. I did Heather´s hair for nearly 14 years and we had some wonderful times together. Loved that woman dearly and think of her often. Xoxo

What a joy to have known Heather. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim and the family. The gates of heaven opened, and the Lord said, "Well done, good and faithful servant." Heather walked through those gates and entered in. "GLORY"!! Love, Norman and Judy Hill

Growing up as a child in Folkston Heather was a beautiful young woman I greatly admired. She was 10 years older than me but I´d often see her at First Baptist Church. She was always kind and offered a beautiful smile to a star struck little girl. I enjoyed seeing her when she would return to Folkston to visit her family. I´m glad I saw her earlier this summer. Heather was as kind and gracious as always. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
