Hughie Tomason played without effort. You could see the look on his face, he loves to play guitar. He has a great voice musically and lyrically; a loss of great talent.

I just returned from my very first Ride To Remember. A ride from Helena MT. to West Yellowstone MT. The ride is a annual event by the Montana Chapter POW-MIA Awareness Association. During the ride, I listened to the Vicious Cycle Tour concert from Nashville. I have watched the concert so many times, I know it all by heart. Hughie was my favorite guitarist in Lynyrd Skynyrd. I had a thought as I was almost home; wouldn't the Spirit Of Hughey Thomasson be a fitting name for my 2007 Harley Davidson Dyna Super Glide, as I do feel he was riding with me.

It´s been a long time since Hughie´s death, but I still don´t want to believe it. The Outlaws, in my opinion, were the best, over Skynyrd, and the rest. I appreciate the chance I got on December 31, 1978 to January 1, 1979 to get a backstage pass, while selling T-shirts for Stillwater, Pat Travers, and the Outlaws in the Lakeland (Florida) Civic Center. It was the highlight of my life at the time.
It always will hurt, such a tragic death, but Hughie was accomplished and a true professional. I share my deepest condolences to the family and their closest friends. God bless you all.

I had the pleasure of seeing the Outlaws in the late 70's at the Capitol Center in Landover Md. They were the headliner with Molly Hatchet and the Marshall Tucker band, all the original members in all 3 bands! And wow did they bring the house down with Green Grass and high tides, simply amazing!

I can never thank you enough for all you have done for me Hughie. Growing up, you and your music are the only things that kept me alive. I would travel anywhere by myself at 14 just to see and hear you play. I got off at the wrong tain stop once and almost lost my life. It was worth it. You taught me Faith, family, and music. Through your inspiration, I became a professional drummer and I would think of you as I got ready to hit the stage. Your energy and love for the crowd taught me humility and kindness. I never got to thank you in person but I was behind you one time when you got locked out of the venue you were playing. . A special thanks to your wife for allowing us to share you. You had the voice of an Angel and the guitar playing of an Archangel. God bless you and your family. I know you now play in Heaven for Jesus where the grass is always green and the tides are always high...

I was and still am a huge Outlaws fan. In the summer of 1975 I was introduced to the band by my older brother. What an incredible debut album. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and was fortunate to have see them perform four times (San Jose Civic, 1976, Oakland Coliseum 1977, Frost Theatre/Stanford, 1978 and Santa Clara University 1980) and they were an amazing live act. I remember seeing them for the first time as they opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd in San Jose, CA. in '76 and not many of the crowd really knew them at that time, even though those of us who did were there to hear "Green Grass and High Tides" and "There Goes Another Love Song," et al. Hughie and Billy and the rest of the band was both tight and technically clean and crisp. They opened with "Waterhole" and just literally churned through their set. By the time they finished, LS knew the stage was set hot. LS did a great show and I wouldn't go as far as to say that they "Blew LS off the stage." However, the talk at the end of the evening was circulating around how good the Outlaws were and they took off from there in my experience. RIP Hughie, Billy and Freddie

Saw them first in 78 with the original army after playing the grooves off bring em back alive and they were spot on. Caught them many times with the line up changes from huge arenas to small venues it was always Hughie that stole the show and didn't even know it. Music was real and powerful and tight as hell. The jokes they put in the hall of fame couldn't carry his picks It's such a shame to not the recognize this genius. It's full circle flame there were never be another, your music will always live on.

As a Tampa native I have been a fan since the earliest days of the band. I went to your house to work on your lawn tractor. The name on the work order was Hugh Thomasson. It didn't click for me until I saw the license plate on your truck. Ghostrider 2. We talked for hours. I left with not only hats, shirts and albums. But with a friend. God bless.

Remembering Mr. Thomasson fondly as I listen to his music. One song I listen to often, and redundantly is one of my all time favorites since it was released - HURRY SUNDOWN. Such passion in a man who could write a ballad the likes of that. Gone before his time.
Wishing his family the warmest of memories as they go on still grieving his loss.

I saw Hughie and Outlaws for the first time in Providence RI in 1978. I saw them many times at The Cape Cod Colleseum. Hughie was a genius as a guitarist and a songwriter. His voice was brilliant and distinctive - always recognizable voice. The Outlaws cannot be replaced. I was fortunate to briefly meet Hughie after a Cape concert after the show. A down to earth wonderful and cordial man. Talent beyond reproach! I wish the last album of his life was released to the entire world. He was the real deal. My favorite band and a wonderful leader of a terrific band. Not a day goes by that I don't think of Hughie when I here Outlaws. I live in Sarasota at the age of 55 ( same age and sadly when The Man died). Someday I would like to have coffee or lunch with Mrs Thomasson to talk to her about her great husband - my treat.
No one can replace Hughie Thomasson.

I was a teenager in the 70's when the Outlaws hit the scene and they quickly became my favorite band. The area of Jersey that I lived in was a hot bead for Southern Rock.
Hughie was a musical genius. He and the Outlaws are probably one of the most underrated bands of all-time. It's a shame that they never given the acclaim and recognition that they so rightly deserved.
I'll never forget my first concert on January 14, 1978. We drove in a snowstorm to the Long Island Coliseum to see the Outlaws open up for the Marshall Tucker Band. It's still the best concert I ever saw. What I wouldn't give to see Hughie and Billy play one more time. It's really ironic, that only as the years go by, do you actually realize what you had. Unfortunately, there's no way to go back and do it again.
Thank you Mrs. Thomasson for sharing your husband with us for all those years. You have no idea of the amount of joy he gave to all his many fans. May God continue to bless you and your family.

Dear Thomasson Family, I sit now in north TN listening to Knoxville Girl, and Stay With Me, two of my favorites. As a fairly good guitarist now myself, I say to you now that it was for the most part as a beginner in the late 70s it was Hughie and the other guitarists he assembled that stoked the fire within me to play. They will forever be my favorite band with what I consider unique, and unequaled talent as composers and players. I am very happy to also hear he was man of faith. May he "Rock God" southern style. "Keep Prayin!" I will for Hughie, his family, and all the other Outlaws.
Love,

Cape Cod Coliseum in the late 70's. We drove into the dirt parking lot in a stake truck with a huge Outlaws logo on a bed sheet, the size of a King bed sheet...The crowd in the lot erupted in hysterics and applause. Such was the effect of the Outlaws during those years. My memories of the Outlaws run deep. Such good times, and Hughie, such a great singer and player. Billy too.
Again at Al's Warehouse north of Syracuse in the early 80s.

I sure do miss Hughie and the Outlaws. Such memorable music. They used to play the Cape Cod Coliseum in Yarmouth,MA back in the 70s and I saw them a few times there. The crowd in the parking lot went crazy!
