Of the many families that live in Country Oaks, Jim's presence and persona was distinctly unique, definitely one-of-a-kind. Oozing with persona.
Persona describes a character played by an actor . . . except in Jim's case he was neither, not on stage nor an actor; he was living life large. Jim was simply Jim. Honest and straightforward.
Persona matched physical size - he loomed large, equal to the occasional boldness of speech and colorful opinions one always enjoyed while listening - in the workshop-garage or in the garden. Both were daily playgrounds, nesting sites. Jim had a "man-cave" well before man-cave became a popular term.
Yet beneath the occasional bluster was a steep measure of kindness, generosity, plus loyalty - be it Gators at UofF, or individual people. For whatever reason as his across-the-street neighbor I enjoyed the latter, Jim's friend; "anything I have you're welcome to."
A plethora of shop tools and machines always attracted common interests, similar to the bonding of two car-guys and their toys.
Whether it was his colorful descriptives about attempts to grow perfect tomatoes in the garden, or green grass, peaches or oranges - Jim was never at a loss for an opinion, and when it came to garden-stuff: inevitably a stream of bright-ideas that "were going to set the world on fire" and deliver perfection.
Bugs, of course, inevitably intervened. Florida is Florida. Always something that foiled the best-laid plans of mice and men. Grass, tomatoes, oranges or whatever.
But always around the corner: "the next bright idea." Never a shortage of energy.
Though Jim oozed persona, never was he an actor. Always a straight-shooter of opinion and always straight from the hip. I relished that honesty. Nothing fake nor contrived. Genuine to the dirt on his boots he was a "doer" not just a "talker." Whatever the idea - "let's give it a try."
Jim's persona matched that of a mighty ship at sea: full-speed ahead, damn the torpedos!
And so it was we shared life, a street divided yet we bonded like moths attracted to a common flame. A hurricane damaged roof or a major tree in need of cutting, what Jim couldn't handle I added the wherewithal.
Today's living monument to Jim remains standing tall in my backyard. After the hurricane in '04 when Charley leveled the area's landscape, obliterated 60-big trees in my yard - Jim had a bright idea.
Of six gorgeous laurel oaks planted many years previous, all that had grown very large . . . one was tipped over "only" 45-degrees with roots laid bare - the rest flattened entirely and destroyed.
Jim's bright idea: I'll bring over my big jeep and hook up the winch on the front bumper, let's see if we can possibly get it standing straight. Many ropes and colorful words later plus beads of sweat . . . Jim's idea paid off!
The might oak stood straight, the lone survivor and monument to the past. Attached support ropes for two years and plenty of hand watering . . . the laurel oak evolved into a backyard centerpiece as it stands today.
Sheltered by its leaves is a nearby hand-crafted arbor, within the arbor a large old cast iron school bell, its surface etched by years of life and sheer endurance. Symbolic of Jim himself. A honeysuckle vine and flowers soften the edges.
One mighty oak has fallen.
Another remains standing tall.
Distinctly heard is the resonate ring of an old school bell.

Dear Ann,
The first time I met Jim he had just finished treating an elderly lady in a nursing home and was combing her hair for her. She was so happy to have him fussing over her. What a kind and special person he was. My thoughts are with you. I am so sorry for your loss.
