JEAN PATRICK Obituary

PATRICK, Jean, Ed.D., 98, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2011, at John Knox Village in Tampa.

Jean Patrick was born in Villa di Mezzo, Abruzzi, Italy, in 1912. Jean's father preceded the family in coming to the United States, while Jean and her mother joined him in 1922, in Western Pennsylvania. Jean graduated from New Kensington High School. Jean gained a teaching degree from Indiana State Teachers College and taught both history and geography in her hometown of Iselin, Pa. Jean married Albert Patrick and in 1940, the couple moved to Tampa, where Jean taught at Lutz Elementary. After teaching developmentally handicapped students at Robert E. Lee School, Jean directed the first ever Tampa school for learning-challenged students, The Drew Park School. Jean served as principal at W.B. Henderson, Graham, Cahoon, Lois, and Forest Hills Elementary Schools. After an illustrious career, Jean retired in 1982. She immediately volunteered in schools and headed the Volunteer Auxiliary at St. Joseph's Hospital's Pediatrics Unit. By then, living in Lutz, Jean and Albert enjoyed travel, hobby farming, and motorcycling. From the early 1990s until 2003, the couple lived in Inverness, Fla., where Jean volunteered at Citrus Memorial Hospital and Inverness Primary School.

After Albert's passing, Jean moved to John Knox Village in Tampa. There, her active life included gardening, managing the Village Flea Market, helping in the Library and MedCenter, serving as lector in the St. Joseph Chapel at the Village, and walking her Jack Russell Terrier, "Suzie." Jean Patrick held both master's and doctoral degrees in education. She was a longtime member of the American Association of Elementary School Principals, American Association of University Professors, National Education Association, Florida State Education Association, Florida State PTA, and Kappa Delta Pi. A Roman Catholic, Jean belonged to St. Mary's Parish Church in North Tampa. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Albert; and her elder daughter, Jeanie. She is survived by sisters, Olga and Mary; daughter Maureen; and grand-daughter, Debra Jean Rose.

Funeral services for Dr. Jean Patrick will take place Sunday, July 17, 2011 at Garden of Memories, 4207 E. Lake Avenue, Tampa, FL 33610. Visitation will take place at 1 p.m., with the service at 2 p.m. Interment will take place in Garden of Memories.

I was meaning to say Maureen and Debra as the people she was so proud of every time we spoke.

What wonderful memories I have of Dr. Patrick. Forest Hills where she hired me as a curriculum specialist and helped me become an elementary principal is just the beginning. We have stayed in touch since the 1970's and I enjoyed visits in Inverness and at John Knox. She has been the only person I still wrote letters because she did not like computers. Jeannie and Debra, she talked about you both at every visit. You were loved by her in addition to being very proud of your accomplishments.

To Jean's family. I was president of Citrus Memorial Hospital Auxiliary when Jean volunteered there. She would stop in the office and we would have such nice chats. Jean was a very special lady and

I have loving memories of my friend and principal. She shall be missed. I well remember her walking down the hallways at Forest Hills where you could hear the clicking of her high heels. I am so sorry I will not be able to attend the funeral but my sympathy goes out to her family.
