John was my best friend. 48 years ago, I met him at Lakewood Sport Parachuting center, (NJ); when he and I first started jumping. Over the years our lives intertwined and John was my "Best Man" at my wedding. 18 years ago, my company moved me to Tampa and John was still jumping. Driving from New Port Richey to Zephyrhills, thus driving directly past the area where I had a house built. So, for those 18 years; John would stop by after jumping and he, my wife and I would go out to lunch.
John's "Protect and Serve" mentality, had him checking the house when we were away. He was a very good friend and will be sorely missed.
The real condolence is that John passed away doing what he enjoyed - skydiving.

I first met John in June 1962 on the yellow footprints outside receiving when we became Platoon 144 at MCRD Paris Island. He always like to tell the story of when he was attacked by an upright in the middle of the squad bay. The DI had dismissed a class circle and in his desire to get back in front of his rack he ran full speed smack into one of the uprights. We always laughed at the fact that the individual who was most concerned was the DI who was terrified that he might be accused of thumping a recruit.
We served together in A/1/6 and later in Div. M.P.s. We spent many days in the field at Lejeune and on liberty in the Med. When we were in MP company, I should have guessed that he would join the police by the amount of time he spent practicing twirling his baton like the old time beat cops. He got very good. His time in the Corps also came in handy when he was asked to supervise the NYTP honor guard.
Through the years we have remained in contact. Later in the 70s when I was in college and had a summer job with the Penn Central RR, we would occasionally get together for lunch. Years later when I was organizing ski races for the VSP at Killington I invited John to participate, he came up to ski but would not race. Too dangerous he said. That sounded strange coming from someone who jumped out of airplanes for fun. He visited us in Killington on several occasions, usually on his trips to or from Maine.
In addition to his passion for sky diving he also had a serious interest in tracing his family roots in Ireland. He made several trips to Ireland connecting with many of his relatives. Interestingly many of them are also cops. Many of our conversations revolved around jumping and Irish history. I have several videos of his participation in attempts to break sky diving records. It is somehow appropriate that when he passed, he was doing what he loved to do and on the Marine Corps birthday.
I will always remember and cherish our long friendship.
