Reyes, Lillian Rita
known affectionately as "Nana Reyes," passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at the age of 93, surrounded by the love of her three daughters, Lillian, Marilyn, and Connie; her sons-in-law, Bob Joyce, Norm Burrows, and Mike Matranga; her 11 grandchildren; and her caregivers (Jeannette Herrera) and family friends. A woman of profound intelligence, unwavering faith, and boundless love, she leaves behind a legacy of strength and devotion that will forever be cherished by her family.
Born in Havana, Cuba, on May 21, 1932, Lillian was the daughter of Francisco Barroso, a pharmacist, and Consuelo Machin Barroso, a socialite. Lillian pursued her love of learning, earning a Doctorate in Education. While at the University of Havana, she met Luis Reyes, a medical student who would become the love of her life. They married on August 7, 1954, and together, they embarked on a new life in the United States.
After her husband, "Papa Reyes," completed his medical training in Cleveland, Ohio, they settled in Woodstock, Virginia where Papa became the town doctor and Lillian's gifts for leadership and education shone brightly. She founded the town's first kindergarten, recognizing the importance of early childhood education. A dedicated teacher both inside and outside the classroom, she also led three Girl Scout troops and worked as a high school teacher. Her community involvement was extensive, serving as president of the Woodstock Woman's Club and leading the Follies committee for the hospital. Her children and their friends will never forget the elaborate and joyful birthday parties she hosted, a testament to her creative and generous spirit.
In 1971, the family moved to Clearwater, Florida, where Lillian continued to take on new challenges, including managing her husband's medical practice. Yet, her most important role was always as a mother and grandmother. She gave her three daughters, Lillian Joyce, Marilyn Burrows, and Connie Matranga, a perfect childhood rooted in love and a deep respect for education and family.
This same incredible love was poured into her 11 grandchildren, Jillian Joyce, Brittany Burrows Deemer (husband Kevin Deemer), Jamison Joyce, Brooke Burrows, Brandi Burrows, Brandt Burrows (wife Isabella Burrows carrying great-grandbaby-to-be), Garrett Matranga, Jacqueline Joyce, Mason Matranga, Cara Avery Rose Matranga (fiancé Chance Thomas), and Reed Matranga. Nana Reyes was a steadfast presence in their lives, always offering her love, attention, and wise advice. Her love extended to all her family, aunts, uncles, and cousins with legendary family gatherings.
A devout Catholic, Lillian's faith was a central pillar of her life, and she was always involved with her church community. Her home was filled with not only her exceptional cooking but also the comfort of her deep faith and a wealth of knowledge gleaned from being a lifelong, avid reader. Her keen mind and wide-ranging intellect meant she could discuss almost any topic, sharing her knowledge of the world with family and friends. Her quiet wisdom and unwavering support were the anchors of her family, providing a source of strength and comfort through all of life's seasons.
