Lucian Reeves Obituary

REEVES, Lucian Woodard (Woody), U.S. Navy retired, died peacefully in Daytona Beach, Fla., August 7, 2010, with family at his bedside. Woody was born September 20, 1918, to Lona Jane Binkley and Harry S. Reeves in Marshall County, Ky. Woody joined the U.S. Navy in 1940 and was stationed aboard the USS Medusa (AR-1) at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, December 7, 1941. He spent the remainder of World War II stationed throughout the South Pacific. He remained in the Navy after the war and was honorably discharged as a senior chief petty officer in 1960.

Woody met the love of his life, Roma Fern Saunders, while in Norfolk, Va., and married her in 1956. After retiring from the Navy, he worked in Owensboro, Ky., and at Cape Canaveral, Fla. He retired to Tampa with Roma in 1983. During his retirement, Woody spent considerable time tinkering in his workshop. He was an amateur clockmaker, gunsmith and an excellent woodcarver. He was a Mason and a member of Tampa clockmakers guild.

Woody was a caring, loving and compassionate man. He is survived by his son, Philip Reeves (Kathy), Tallahassee, Fla.; his daughter, Carey Reeves Girouard (Mike), Palm Coast, Fla.; and four grand-children. He was preceded in death by his wife, Roma Saunders Reeves; sister, Louise Reeves Hilliard; brother, Howard Reeves; and son, Charles Reeves. A memorial service will be scheduled at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla., where Woody will be buried with full military honors next to Roma. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Florida Veterans Foundation Inc., 4040 Esplanade Way, Tallahassee, FL 32399; Odyssey Hospice, 149 South Ridgewood Ave., Suite 400, Daytona Beach, FL 32114; or a charity of your choice.

I had the honor of serving on the Arnold with Woody; he was such a kind and generous man, with a pleasant word for everyone. I was sorry to hear about his passing. If we'd known he was in Daytona Beach, my husband (Thor - another of Woody's Arnold shipmates) and I would have gone up to visit with him. He will be missed.

"Woody" was an exceptional guy, one who was willing to help anyone in need. I have a special memory of him because he "put up" with an amateur-machinist as he made certain that the amateur operated the lathe and milling machines, in his workshop, in a safe and proper manner.Pat Utecht (Satellite Beach, FL)

Woody was my neighbor on the Arnold for a number of years. I recall some jewelry he made with a Topaz he bought in Guam while we were there.
