Peter Knight III

KNIGHT, Peter Oliphant III, born January 4, 1919, in Elfers, Fla., died March 27, 2006, at home in Clearwater, Fla. He is survived by his wife, Faye Phelps Knight; three daughters, Tanda, Cara and Jill; and one grandson, James J. Caufield. He was predeceased by his daughter, Linde K. Steigerwald. Peter came from pioneer Florida stock. His paternal grandfather, Peter O. Knight Sr., was well known in the area. His mother Rosalind Parrish Knight's grandfather, Crawford Parrish, came to Florida under the Armed Occupation Act in 1841. Peter attended local schools and graduated from Sewanee Military Academy in 1937, and studied horticulture at the University of Florida. He was a member of Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity and the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Clearwater. Peter was associated with his father, Joe Knight Sr., at Sans Souci Groves in Elfers, Fla. He enlisted soon after Pearl Harbor and served 39 months in the South Pacific on an LCI landing craft. After the war, he and Faye settled in Clearwater and he rejoined his father at the grove in Elfers. When the grove was sold for development in the late 1970s, he did volunteer work at Morton Plant Hospital until he retired. Peter and Faye were married 64 years. He is survived by a brother, Joe Knight Jr., and various nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, 11701 S. Belcher Road #130, Largo, Fla. Services will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, April 3, 2006, with Father John Heirs. Interment will follow.
