Salvatore RUGGIERO Obituary
84, of Spring Hill, FL, passed away peacefully Monday, July 24, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jean, and his siblings, Ralph, Frank and Theresa. Sal was born in Newark, NJ in 1932 to Anthony and Lena and served time in the Army during the Korean War. He worked full-time as a Newark Fireman before retiring in 1989. After retiring he worked as a Police Officer for UMDNJ and as a security guard for an armored car service. Sal and his family moved to Iselin in 1963 where he volunteered at the Iselin Fire Department and was elected Fire Chief in 1972. In 1978 the family moved to Clark, where he was elected Councilman. Sal was also a Mason with the LaFayette Lodge No. 27 F. & A.M. in Rahway and the Osceola Presbyterian Church in Clark, until he moved to Florida in 1998.
On June 26, 1954 he married his late wife, JoAnn Ruggiero (deceased). JoAnn and Sal were married for 58 years before she passed away in 2013 from cancer. They raised five beautiful children; Salvatore Jr. and his wife Charlene, Michele and her husband Clark, Anthony and his wife Tania, Jamie and her husband James (both deceased), Cheryl and her husband Walter Jr. Sal was a loving grandfather to nine grandchildren, Ashley, Jessica, Courtney (deceased), Jamie Jr, Heather, Walter III, Keira, Jonathan and Jake and seven great-grandchildren, Kenneth, Jordan, Jaylynn, Julius, Mercedes, Katrina and Victoria. Sal and his wife moved to Spring Hill in 1998 where he became an active member of his church. He also served as the President of the Pennsylvania Club and his Home Owners Association. His passions were spending time with his family, making new friends, helping others, traveling and being active in his local community.
A service will be held on Thursday, July 27 at 1 pm at the First United Methodist Church, 9344 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill. Visitation will be held that evening from 6-8 pm at the Downing Funeral Home, 1214 Wendy Ct, Spring Hill. Interment will be Friday, July 28 at 8:30am at the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell.

I remember you dad well. Him and my father would always kid around at the firehouse in Iselin. As a young fire officer I would look to you dad for guidence and he always had my back. He was without a doubt one of the best. My mom and I send our condolences to the Ruggiero family.
