Tyler Hollingworth
William ("Holly") Right Hollingsworth, Jr.

William ("Holly") Right Hollingsworth, Jr. passed away at home on Wednesday, December 23, 2020. He was 93. Although his family will miss him dearly, we take comfort knowing that he is now reunited with his wife of 68 years, Jo.

Holly, along with younger brothers John and Dana, were born to William and Thelma Hollingsworth. His father was a career naval officer and Holly spent his childhood in Washington, DC, Annapolis, MD, Panama, and Coronado, CA.

Holly earned a bachelor's degree from Pomona College, and a J.D. from Stanford University. It was during his time at Stanford that he fell in love with his wife, Jo, after meeting her in the cafeteria line. After graduating, they married and Holly went into private practice in Manhattan Beach, where he was a lawyer for 19 years while raising four children alongside Jo. He was appointed as a judge of the South Bay Municipal Court in 1972 and was appointed to the Los Angeles Superior Court on December 20, 1983, where he served until his retirement in 1995.

Prior to his appointment to the bench he served on the Manhattan Beach City Council, including one year as mayor, and as a trustee for the Manhattan Beach City Schools, president of the South Bay Bar Association, and president of the Manhattan Beach Rotary Club.

Holly also managed to have plenty of fun with family and friends! The perpetual host, he and his wife loved to have dinner parties. Holly always had a joke at the ready. He was an excellent cook of southern food. You were never in his home for more than ten minutes without being offered food and drink.

He and Jo were part of a decades-long potluck group and held weekly family dinners with their children and grandchildren. They loved to travel with family and friends, particularly to Mazatlan, Mexico, where they returned to the same property for many years. Holly passed quieter moments doing crossword puzzles, working out at the local gym, reading the paper, and clipping coupons, taking great joy in even the smallest bargains.

Holly's generosity, gregarious spirit, approachability, and heart for others served as a model of a life well-lived for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He will live on in the hearts of his four children: William Right Hollingsworth III (Maren Nelson), Lee Elin Taylor (Timothy Taylor), Sherrel Jean Hollingsworth

(Jeffrey Protzman), Julia Ann Douville (Paul Douville); eight grandchildren, Tyler (Nathan), Benjamin (Madeline), Nicholas, William, Corey (Brad), Alyssa (Keenan), Brett (Jenny), Anna; and great-grandchildren, Theodore and Quinley.

We will dearly miss his big personality, black-eyed peas, baked spaghetti, and Sunday cocktail hour.

If you wish to honor him, please consider sending his family a note of
remembrance at [email protected]. No flowers please.
