Andrew Vascellaro Obituary

ANDRE W VASCEL LARO After a full and adventurous life, Andrew Vascellaro passed away Tuesday February 24, 2009 in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 26, 1923 in Brooklyn, New York to Italian immigrants, Charles Vascellaro and Carmela Polichetti Vascellaro and brother to the late Sylvester and Matthew Vascellaro. He served as a flight officer in the US Army Air Corps during W odd War II, attended Queens College in New York and University of Tennessee. His achievement s included being a radio and telegraph operator, and a high school substitute teacher in the city of New York Public School system. He was a small business owner, master plumber and contractor, building inspector, designer of homes and home builder, taught and tutored English and math to the underprivileg ed, a published poet, painter, clock builder, and archeologist. Association membership included the Knights of Columbus from 1955 to 1972 where he rose to Fourth Degree and served as Grand Knight in New York. As a founding father of the Stuart, Florida chapter of the aSIA he became president and advocate for Italian American history. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, travel, history, science, poetry and opera. He had an insatiable appetite for living, learning, reading, teaching, and mom's cooking. A proud patriarch, he leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 61 years, Marie Firpo Vascellaro; his four children and their spouses, Andrea and Thomas McGoldrick, L yn and Britt Reid, Michael and Dini Vascellaro , and Andrew and Cathy Vascellaro; his grandchildren, Jennifer and Gregory Goetz, Brenda and Brian McDonagh, Joseph and Brandy Dorto, Michael Dorto, Andrew, Ashley, Nickolas, and Yssa, Vascellaro, Stephanie Strickland, Britton, Emily, Anne and Jamie Reid; and his great- grandchildre n, Gregory, Lauren and Patrick Goetz, Jack Dorto, and Kiera McDonagh; along with many other family members and friends. A memorial service will be held on Friday February 27, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach. Interment will follow at Princess Anne Memorial Park.
