FRANCES DAGGETT ALDRICH PROVIDENCE: Aldrich, Frances Daggett of Providence, Rhode Island, South Dartmouth, Massachusetts and Vero Beach, Florida, died peacefully of natural causes at her home in Providence, Rhode Island, on April 2, 2012, surrounded by her children. Frances, known as "Daisy" to family and friends, was born on December 9, 1923, to Frances Gamble Daggett and David Lewis Daggett in New Haven, Connecticut. She was a direct descendent of Miles Standish and Roger Sherman, Mayor of New Haven, U.S. Senator and signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Association, the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution, and niece of Henry L. Stimson, Secretary of War during World War II. Daisy grew up in New Haven, where she attended the Foot School, Mrs. Days' School and Miss Porter's School. On September 13, 1943, she married Lieutenant Richard Steere Aldrich, the son of Janet Innis Aldrich and Richard S. Aldrich, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Rhode Island, the grandson of Nelson W. Aldrich, U.S. Senator from Rhode Island, and a nephew of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. Dick died in 1997. Daisy and Dick had four children: Frances Aldrich Llopis of Madrid, Spain; Richard S. Aldrich, Jr. of New York City; Abby Aldrich Gray of Baltimore and William Stuart Aldrich of Chicago. During her 54 years of life with Dick, she moved with her family from New Haven to Washington, DC; Sao Paulo, Brazil; New York City and South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, before retiring with Dick to Providence, Rhode Island. Daisy co-owned and ran "M's" in Providence, a retail shop on Wayland Square, and succeeded Dick as part-owner of The Portuguese Times and the Portuguese Channel of New Bedford, Massachusetts. She served as a Regent, Trustee, Regent Chair and Honorary Chair of the Capital Campaign for the George Washington's Fredericksburg Foundation, and as President of Play School's Association in New York City, an educational consultation agency for latch-key children. She was a member of the boards of Preserve Rhode Island, Miss Porter's School and the Providence Animal Rescue League. She was a member of the Providence Athenium, Grace Church of Providence, Saint Aidan's Church in South Dartmouth and the Garden Club of Buzzard's Bay. Daisy was a member of The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and also the Colony Club of New York City, the New Bedford Yacht Club, Agawam Hunt Club and The Hope Club in Providence, and The Moorings in Vero Beach. Daisy was preceded in death by her brother David L. Daggett of Pine Orchard, Connecticut. In addition to her four children, Daisy is survived by eight grandchildren: Francesca Garrigues, Lavinia Llopis, Lucy A. Gray, Lydia C. Gray, Richard S. Aldrich IV, Peter T. Aldrich, Russell P. Aldrich and Caroline H. Aldrich; and three great- grandchildren: Michaela de la Mata, Chloe Moraleda and Gilda Moraleda. Daisy will be buried at the Aldrich Family gravesite at the Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, in a private ceremony for immediate family. A memorial service will be held at Grace Church, 175 Mathewson Street, Providence, at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 14, 2012. In lieu of flowers, donations in Daisy's memory may be made to the Providence Animal Rescue League, Rhode Island, 34 Elbow Street, Providence, RI 02903. Aunt Daisy is a brightly remembered jewel of my childhood: sharply funny, looking to heighten the excitement of any family moment going on, someone as a kid I wanted to keep in sight.
She will be greatly missed.
