To the family, many, many friends, and colleagues of this wonderful man Mr. Gary Paulsen fine comfort with you during this difficult time in your lives. We will missed Mr. Gary Paulsen's presence and his many contributions to his community and he wanted young people to read like a wolf eats. He went on to publish many books for young adults including the wilderness survival classic "Hatchet." That love and sense of self he gave to young adults will live through his books. May the love and the special memory you shared and cherish with him show just how much your life was touched by him. May you find comfort in your wealth of fond memories together with Mr. Gary Paulsen. May the God of comfort bless your grieving hearts with strength, loving kindness and peace as the world copes with the loss of Mr. Gary Paulsen. He will be greatly missed, but not forgotten.

I had the opportunity to meet Gary in the woods of northern Minnesota at Waskish MN about 15 years ago. He bought the property next to our family farm. My dad and I were logging on the farm and here comes a man out of the woods and says "Hi, I am Gary Paulsen, your neighbor and wanted to meet you. Unknown to us, he had bought my uncles farm next to ours and wanted to summer train his dogs in preparation for the winter Iditarod race. But it was too warm and he sold the farm and went to Alaska to train the dogs. We watched for two years and he never ran the race but did enter it. We looked him up on the internet. We found out about his books and did read Hatchet. He had quite a special young life and we were blessed to have personally met him.

"Gary Paulsen was the reason I started reading, he made books so realistic. He made the unthinkable thinkable, he made things so easy to understand and I can't imagine the world without him. (quote from Gary Paulsen), "If books could have more, give more, be more, show more, they would still need readers who bring to them sound and smell and light and all the rest that can’t be in books."

I am a one-on-one tutorial teacher in a private school for children with language-based learning disabilities. I teach reading, writing and spelling, and not a year goes by without reading Gary Paulsen's classic, Hatchet. So with that said, it is safe to presume Mrs. Patt has read this complete page-turner at least 13 times! Rest In Peace Gary Paulsen. Your works will live on in our minds and in our hearts forever.

I am a teacher and we teach Hatchet every year. We just finished excerpts from GUTS for an essay, ironically, Gary died the day we finished. This feels like losing grandpa. Rest in peace, what a wonderful author, human being, and a role model. I hope he was reunited with Storm on the rainbow bridge.

Rest in Peace. Your gift of creating a love for reading is amazing. The young reluctant readers that complained they had to read, until I handed them Hatchet. The following week asked for another book just like it. Thank you for sharing your writing and your story Gone to the Woods. Many blessings for giving so many the gift of the love to read.

Rest in peace, Gary.

Its impossible to articulate the importance of your writing in my formative years and I've meticulously gathered all your books from my childhood for my own kids to enjoy. By far, my favorites are HATCHET and THE RIFLE, and they meant more than I can describe in words. I'm not sure I would enjoy reading as much as I do as an adult, if I hadn't been introduced to your writing as a child, and everyone knows how critical reading is for success in life. I cannot possibly thank you enough.

I hope that your family may take comfort in the multitudes of children that your books helped mold into fine, young men and women. You are sorely missed, and I pray that our Lord welcomes you with open arms into your final reward. Well done, good and faithful servant!

I read Gary's novel, "Hatchet" to my gr.4/5 class on a yearly basis. Teaching morals about perseverance and self pity opened up young eager minds with thought and insight to themselves and others! Thank you!
