Harry Holman Obituary

Harry "Bump" Richard Holman

Vero Beach - H.R. "Bump" Holman died peacefully January 17, 2021 at VNA Hospice House, Vero Beach, Florida.

Bump, a Vero native, was born November 20, 1932 to Bud L. and Dorabelle Holman in Vero Beach. He met his life-long love, Myrtle Parker when he was thirteen years old. Bump learned to fly and began crop dusting as a teenager. He attended Florida Southern College and graduated with a degree in Citrus. He and Myrtle were married in 1951. Upon graduation, Bump became chief pilot for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He retired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1964 upon the death of his father to run the local family businesses, Holman Groves, Holman Motors and Blue Cypress Lake Ranch.

Together, he and Myrtle welcomed two sons: Bud Lee and Peter Glenn.

Bump and Myrtle had many adventures in the air, sea and mountains. They participated in Bahamian Flying Treasure Hunts, spent time on their sailboats the SNAFU and SNAFU III and had wild snow mobile adventures in Wyoming with dear friends Wanda and Victor Knight. Bump was an enthusiastic and accomplished big game hunter, going on safaris in Africa with his dad and hunting in Wyoming, where he and Myrtle had a second home.

Back at home, Bump was on the board of trustees at St Edward's School from 1967- 1983. He was chairman from 1971- 1974 and presided over the first commencement in 1974. He became an honorary board member in 1983. Bump and Myrtle were both members of the local Aero Club. He was also a member Quiet Birdmen. Bump proudly accepted the Entrepreneurial Excellence Hall of Fame Award from the Florida Aviation Trade Association in 2006. He served on the board of Seacoast Bank until 2017. At the time of his death he was president and CEO of Sun Aviation, Inc.

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Myrtle Parker Holman, his sons, Bud Lee Holman (David Thomas), Peter Glenn Holman (Molly); three grandchildren Elizabeth Parker Holman, Allison Holman Whipple (Max) and William Peter Holman and two great grandchildren; Michael Fry and Chip Whipple.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Edward's School and VNA Hospice.

Bump was kind enough to give us baseball tickets to Dodger Stadium. A bigger than life person. Our love goes to Myrtle, who we had many cousin lunches with and trips to Ancestry places, and family reunions with. May Angels be with you at this time. Our love, Cousin Carolyn

Maybe it wasn't a two-story Christmas tree, but it seemed that way to me when I was a kid. I can still see Bump high up on the ladder, getting it set up. (Years later, trying to recreate that memory, I chose the tallest tree I could find. I should have paid more attention to the sturdiness of the branches. ;-) ) The Holmans were neighbors and friends who welcomed me into their home, and built a fair chunk of my childhood memories. My love and prayers are with the family. I am grateful for the happy memories. Vickie (Schumann) Wyatt

Vero Beach has lost a legend...a man who was instrumental in shaping the town and the airport, and who profoundly influenced future careers of many aviation professionals. I was privileged to fly with Bump, and wherever we went he was held in high regard by so many people. Truly an inspirational man, to whom I will ever be grateful. Sincere condolences to the Holman family.

Back when I lived and worked in Vero Beach I learned to fly at Sun Aviation. I flew several times with Bump and was always impressed at the patience he showed with my many questions. Bump was a good friend and he will be missed.

A great loss for Vero Beach and especially its airport. He was the patriarch of a family that has been the foundation for much of the airport’s growth and was instrumental in bringing the Dodgers and Eastern Airlines to our town many years ago. Prayers and heartfelt support to the family. May Bump’s soul Rest In Peace and continue to look over the airport and Vero Beach from his new home.

I first met Bump in late 1972 right after I joined Piper at the age of 23. I came from the FBO world, and hit off with "Mr. Holman" from the get-go. As far as I was concerned, he was and always will be Mr. VRB Aviation. End of an era. Farewell my fellow Quiet Birdman. May Bump rest in peace. My condolences to his family.
