James Scott Obituary

James Morefield "JM" Scott

Vero Beach, FL

James Morefield "JM" Scott, age 66, passed away on October 13, 2017 at home in Charlotte, NC. He was the partner of Rachel Schlabach, with whom he shared his last fifteen years.

JM was born in Leesburg, Florida, the son of Hazel Edith Merritt and Morefield James Scott. He graduated Vero Beach High School, Vero Beach, Florida, in 1968. He worked at National Fruit Product Company, makers of White House apple products, for more than 20 years, beginning as an assistant shop mechanic and finishing his career as the Manager of Agricultural Operations.

JM loved music and his family. He played alto sax in his high school band and the 12-string guitar throughout adulthood. His friends and family enjoyed many fireside singalongs of his favorite folk and gospel songs. His love of his family was evident in his relationships with his extensive Scott, Strickland, and Merritt families, his attendance to family functions and his thoughtfulness in passing along family keepsakes to his grandchildren. He and his brothers share countless stories of their childhood times with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is survived in death by longtime partner Rachel Schlabach, his children Jacob (Kristen) and Andrea (Coury), his father, Morefield James Scott, his brothers Chuck and Ray, Rachel's children Kim (Joe), Scott (Shauna), and Ryan, grandchildren Hunter, Alex, Amelia, Merritt, Annalise, and Hazel, and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces. He was predeceased by his mother, Hazel Edith Merritt Scott.

A memorial service will be held November 4 at 10:30 am at Oak Grove Cemetery, Wildwood, Florida. Fellowship and lunch to follow immediately.

Memorial donations may be made to Oak Grove Cemetery.
