John Ziegler Obituary
Sewall's Point, FL
ZIEGLER Jr., John A., age 84, died peacefully in Sewall's Point, Florida on Oct. 24, 2018.
Born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, he graduated from the University of Michigan, and at 23, he was one of the youngest people to earn a Juris Doctor. John's love for both law and sports lead him to the Detroit Red Wings as Vice President and general counsel He was elected as the first Chairman of the League's Board of Governors in 1976.
John served as President of the National Hockey League from 1977 to 1992. Under John's leadership, the NHL expanded from 18 to 24 teams and significantly increased the participation of European players. He created the NHL Award show to honor the League's top players and spearheaded the establishment of the Hockey Hall of Fame. John received the Lester Patrick trophy in 1984 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987.
When he wasn't preparing a gourmet dinner for family and friends, John was on several corporate boards including The First National Bank of South Miami and Sigma Chi. He was actively involved in charities including as Chair of the Foundation Board of Martin Memorial Health Systems and supporting his wife Kay with The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Brubeck Ziegler; four children, John(Alexis), Laura(Christopher), Lisa(Anthony), Adeline Johnson; and eight grandchildren, Angela, Billy, Tess, Esme, Layla, Gigi, Addy, and Paloma.
A private celebration of John's life will take place in December. Donations in John's honor may be made to Martin Memorial Health Systems or The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast.
