Kay Steele Obituary

Kay C. Steele

Port St. Lucie - Kay Carpenter Steele was born September 18, 1938 in Stoughton, Mass. Her family moved to West Palm Beach when she was a young child. Kay graduated from Palm Beach High School in 1956 and married the great love of her life Thomas A. Steele that same year. Tommy and Kay had two children Thomas A. Steele, Jr. (aka Andy) and Terri Kay (Breese). They moved to Stuart in 1971. Kay and Tommy enjoyed camping and often stayed at Sandsprit Park which was once a campground. Kay enjoyed, boating and a small commercial crabbing business and was known as Krabby Kay. They made lifelong friends wherever they went. When Tommy retired at age 50 they moved to their cabin in beautiful scenic Scaly Mountain, NC. The cabin had been in the family since 1967. They made it their home for 26 years. They moved to Port St. Lucie in 2011 to be closer to their children and grandchildren where they continued their lives until their passing. Kay enjoyed camping, sewing, crafting, cross stitching and, her painting. She painted glassware, woodwork and slate. Many of her works of art were sold at local events in Scaly Mountain where she was a member of the Scaly Mountain Women's Club and committee chairperson for the scholarship funds. She enjoyed handling her duties and making sure the local high school students in her community could gain access to available funds for college. She and Tommy both worked tirelessly doing pancake breakfasts to raise money for the club. Their mountain family (the Schandolphs) became part of all of their family here in Florida as well. Kay enjoyed a good laugh and was often the life of the party. Her bubbly personality was infectious and she rarely met a stranger. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed feeding everyone who graced her door. She was little in stature but, giant in moxie and determination. She was dubbed "Grambo" by her grandsons and they had a license plate printed that she proudly displayed on her car . She was a devoted Wife , Mother, Mother in Law, Aunt, Grandmother and more recently great-grandmother. She was a great friend and easy shoulder to lean upon. She shared her advise and wisdom to those who sought it and always was ready to go anywhere in a moments notice. She passed surrounded by family in Hospice Care on September 27th, 2020. She leaves a tremendous void in the family she left behind and will forever be remembered and dearly loved. Kay was pre-deceased by her husband Tommy of 62 years who passed in 2018. She leaves her son Andy Steele (Elizabeth) and her daughter Terri Kay Breese (Howard), 4 grandsons: Justin Breese, (Erica) Weston Breese, Jake Steele, and Joshua Steele, three great grand-children Brayden Breese, Blake Breese and Annikka Steele. The celebration of life had been postponed due to Covid. A small group of friends and family have been notified of a memorial service to be held at Sandsprit Park. There has been a bench dedicated in the memory of both Tom and Kay Steele that will forever keep their camping spot reserved.
