King Snyder Obituary

KING R. SNYDER M.D. King R. Snyder M.D., aged 83, beloved husband of 65 years to Donna (Corson) Snyder, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on February 27, 2008. Dr. Snyder graduated in 1942 from Southside High School, Elmira NY. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy as a corpsman. He attended Bucknell University for his undergraduate degree and Temple University Medical School with a degree in medicine. He had a great love for the medical profession, knowing from a very young age that he wanted to be a doctor. He started his career in general practice and later received his license to practice Obstetrics and Gynecology. He enjoyed a wonderful career and was a prominent physician in the OB/GYN field, bringing many new lives into this world. He also served as city coroner in 1950's. In addition he provided care for Planned Parenthood clinics around the state as well as the prenatal clinic at the Chemung County health department. Dr. Snyder was not just a physician, he was a pioneer, never ceasing to search for new techniques and surgical procedures to improve patient care. He had an insatiable passion for learning and for teaching. Throughout his career he volunteered his time to teach – he regularly lectured the student nurses at the Arnot Ogden School of Nursing and also invited them to observe at his office. He sought to convey knowledge to everyone he came into contact with. He had many hobbies and passions which included golf, flying, crosswords, card games, and handiwork as well as volunteering his time with a literacy organization. As many of his friends and family know, he had a spontaneous and witty sense of humor, always making everyone smile with good and sometimes not so good jokes. As he used to say, "My jokes may be bad, but they're quick". In addition to his wife Donna, he is survived by their six daughters: Sherry Murrin, Judith Snyder, Catherine Snyder, Barbara Snyder, Tina Davis and husband John, and Beth Spaziani and husband Steve; seven grandchildren, David Murrin, Elizabeth Ward, Brian Karavish, Benjamin Davis, Jimmy Davis, Michelle Spaziani, and Alison Spaziani; two great grandchildren, Riley Murrin and Hailey Murrin. He is also survived by his brother Warren and his wife Galina Snyder, sisters Marilyn and husband Roger Carlson, Laurel and husband Charles LaLonde as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. He is predeceased by his beloved parents Percy and Gertrude Snyder, loving son in law Smitty Murrin and grandson Aaron Karavish. The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Burke and the Arnot Ogden nursing staff and Hospice for their compassionate care and emotional support. To celebrate Dr. Snyder's life, friends and family may visit Olthof Funeral Home, between 2:00 and 4:00 pm and 6:00 and 8:00 pm on Saturday, March 1, 2008. Services will be held at First Baptist Church, 121 West Church Street, Elmira, NY, on Monday March 3, 2008 at 10AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Arnot Ogden Medical Center Foundation, designated to the Dr. King Snyder Fund for the continuing education of OB/GYN nurses. A "Candle of Remembrance" may be left for the family in Obituaries at www.olthof.com.

Aunt Donna and all my cousins...I was so glad to be a part of the memorial service for Uncle King. I enjoyed seeing you all after so many years and also your beautiful families whom I wish I knew better. I remember my Uncle King as a man who always had a smile, always had a joke. He reminded me so much of Grandpa Snyder who also has a positive attitude towards life with the belief you can do anything you set your mind to with hard work and determination. Uncle King was that kind of man. I always admired him and you Aunt Donna for your devotion to each other. As a kid I thought your eloping and marriage was so romantic! I remember the sleepovers with my cousins, swimming in the pool Uncle King made!! Sliding down that awesome slide with the bump in the middle. He made the slide too!! Those 4th of July picnics with the biggest burgers ever ! His home was always open to me and I always felt welcome. As I was an only child being part of the family was wonderful. I never was lonely there! I never imagined while sitting in the church, listening to the testimonies to my uncle that I would lose my dad one week later. I can truly say my heart goes out to everyone of you... I know your pain. Aunt Donna I just wanted to keep hugging you and not let go. Thank you for coming to Dad's viewing I know how hard that must have been. Even though we have't kept in touch too well I love you all. We have lost two wonderful precious men one a doctor and one a teacher! Heaven's gain is our great loss..but both our loved ones are at peace. God Bless all of you! Love from Sandy

Judy:

I read in our church bulletin from First Baptist Church that your dad had passed away. My condolences to you and your family. Your Mom and Dad were our B.Y.F. advisors. They did a great job - they were so caring and fun to be around.

Your family and house on Church (or Water) Street reminded me of "It's A Wonderful Life".

You will smile as you remember all the good times that you spent with them. Keep those precious thoughts and memories.

Dr. Snyder delivered my first-born back in July 1969. He was the only OB-GYN I ever saw and was truly one of the best. He always displayed professional compassion and understanding; he always knew when to add a little humor to help his patients feel more at ease. His family has lost a very special person; Heaven has gained a remarkable soul; the medical community has lost a pioneer; and, as one of Dr. Snyder's patients, I have wonderful memories of an irreplaceable physician. My deepest sympathy and condolences to his family...... Dr. Snyder was "one of a kind"..... I will never forget how wonderful he was to me during the time I was his patient. God bless you, Dr. King Snyder... rest in peace.
