Morris Gibbons Obituary

Morris "Darby" A. Gibbons III, 60, died Jan. 23, 2009, at home. He was born in Vero Beach. He attended Rosewood Elementary and Vero Beach High School. He graduated from Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass., in 1966. In 1970, he graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from Syracuse University. He received a graduate degree from the University of Massachusetts in government administration in 1984. He was an acolyte for Trinity Episcopal Church. He was a teacher at the Winchendon School in Winchendon, Mass., and St. Edward's School, where he also became director of college guidance and academic dean. He was nominated for the Larry West Award by the Southern Association for Counseling. He served on the Board of Directors of the Dollars for Scholars Foundation, the Heritage Center, the Indian River Literary Society and St. Francis Manor, all of Vero Beach. He was a member of the Exchange Club of Indian River County and the Vero Beach Museum of Art. He volunteered as a judge for the annual Indian River County Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Patti Wilmot Gibbons; daughter, Patricia Emily Gibbons; mother, Gloria Gibbons of Vero Beach; brothers, Chuck Gibbons and Kevin Gibbons, both of Vero Beach; sisters, Gloria Tejera of Miami, Heather Lowther of Vero Beach and Madge Dobeck of Atlanta. He was preceded in death by his father, Morris A. Gibbons II; and brothers, Carter Gibbons and Mark Gibbons. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dollars for Scholars Foundation, P.O. Box 1820, Vero Beach, FL 32961. SERVICES: A memorial service and celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 16 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Vero Beach. A reception will follow in the Great Hall. Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach. A guest book may be signed at lowtherfuneralhome.com.
