Nancy Gill Obituary

Nancy Gill

Stuart, FL

Nancy P. Gill, 86, of Stuart, FL, passed away peacefully on Dec. 26, 2016 at Sincerely Yours Home Care of Stuart under the loving care of Pamela Amendola.

Born with congenital glaucoma in Middletown, OH on Sept. 22, 1930, she was the last survivor of 8 siblings, being predeceased by parents Ronald and Wealthea Gill, sisters Jane, Anna Marie, and Charlotte, and brothers "Sonny" (Ronald), John David, Jim Bill, and Donald. Nancy took care of her mother who died after a long illness when Nancy was just 17.

While Nancy was a governess to a prominent local family for 10 years, she went to college at night and received her BS in Education from Oxford University of Ohio, Cincinnati, and went on to earn her MS degree in Child Psychology from the University of Cincinnati. She taught 24 years in the Cincinnati Board of Education, working with 'special needs' students and felt her proudest achievement was "making a difference in the lives of inner city school kids".

Always actively involved in her community, she was Leader of the "Girls Reserves" of Cincinnati, President and Life Member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) of Cincinnati and member of the Stuart Area Branch of the AAUW, President of the Women's Club of Cincinnati, and President of the Alumni Club of the Board of Education of Cincinnati. She lost her sight in 1996 and moved to Stuart (so "not to become a burden to her friends and family").

In Stuart she was involved with the 20/200 Fellowship, Inc. (for the visually impaired), was President of the VIPs (Visually Impaired Persons of Stuart) for many years, was an active member of the Stuart Area Branch of the American Association of Women, and joined the Halpatiokee Branch of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church of Jensen Beach.

Anyone who knew Nancy was familiar with her intense love of music. She loved the piano, organized and ran an opera group for many years, supported the Middletown Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati May Festival, the Atlantic Classical Orchestra and loved to attend the Jureit-Beamish Musicales.

She did not let blindness diminish her zest for life, and even though she struggled in later life with severe hearing loss, her quick wit, sharp mind and keen interest in everything around her were very special to those who knew her.

A memorial service will be held on January 17, 2017 at 10 am, All Saints Episcopal Church of Jensen Beach, 2303 NE Seaview Dr., Jensen Beach, FL. Arrangements entrusted to Aycock Funeral Home, 505 SW Federal Hwy, Stuart, FL 34994, dignitymemorial.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stuart Friends of the Atlantic Classical Orchestra, PO Box 1722, Stuart, FL 34995, the Treasure Coast Community Singers Orchestra Fund, 631 Calmoso Dr., Port St. Lucie, FL 34983-2249, or to the Cincinnati May Festival Annual Fund Gift, 1241 Elm St., Cincinnati, OH 45202-7531.

Farewell Ms Nancy, mother of my heart. You were a guiding light in my life and will remain so forever. You, Ms Gill, were a force of nature. You have left a legacy of students, professional peers and friends who benefited from your living example of kindness, generosity, tenacity and wisdom in the face of adversity. You shared humor and joy with each of us. And, YOU were the best story teller ever!! "Oh, please Mister Tiger don't eat me up.."
Your chandalar will light up my dining room, your Christmas stocking will welcome Santa and your demitasse cups will hold my evening coffee.
Say hello to Charles.
And know, my dear Nancy, you are deeply loved by me.

I only met Nancy at age 65, after she became blind and moved to an town where she knew few people and started a new life. Her continued spirit of perseverance, joy, witty and straight forward comments, and continued participation in life and the lives of others are nothing short of amazing. Few people can say they have given as much to others!! Thank you Nancy for being a part of our lives!! Your cousin ...
