I just found out Pete had passed. I am so sorry for the family. I worked with Pete when he was a Deputy for Martin County. He was a great Deputy and a great guy. We had lots of fun times together working the streets. I hope he had a good life and died peacefully. What a loss.

Some memories of her Dad from Donna Bass
Pete came into my life when my daughter Laurie was just a few weeks old, when I would go over to visit he would put a blanket on the rocking chair in the living room for her to sleep. He would walk by and smile at her and say look at Grampa Pete's sweet pea. When my youngest daughter Karen was born he had just gotten off a long work shift when I went into labor, he stayed for all 6 hours of my labor and wouldn't leave until Karen saw her Grampa Pete. He was such a special person with a heart as big as the world. He became my Dad from the very beginning.
After Pete and my Mom moved to Florida, I went through a rough time living with an abusive husband. He spent endless hours on the phone with me, giving me advise and just checking in to make sure I was OK
After a while he insisted I come to Florida. He stood by me and taught me to strong and not to be afraid. He got me my first job here where I met my wonderful husband Don of now 28 years.
When I changed jobs I met and became good friends with Crystal, who I introduced to my Dad. After a while he and Crystal were married and good friends became family.
He has been such an inspiration to many people. I would not be where I am today if it had not been for the love of my Dad.He was my hero. He is truly missed.

Some memories of her Dad from Carol Gunter
He was born in Queens ,NY. When his parents divorced they moved to Pittsfield,MA.Pete and his brother Donald lived with a family while their mother worked and got settled. She was living in a one room apt,but had the boys come live with her. His mom married George Corio and Pete loved him very much. He spent the summers with his Uncle Neil "Patrick" Frey(pronounced Fry). That is where he found his love of the water. When he got older he enlisted in the Navy and got married. He had 8 children. He spent the summer with his family camping on Mt Greylock, and visiting family and friends for picnics. He loved to canoe and sail his sailboat on Pontoosuc Lake. He always wanted to be a police officer and finally he became a Deputy Sheriff in Cheshire,MA.He moved to Florida and was a Deputy Sheriff for Martin County until he retired and moved to Live Oak,FL. He taught himself to play several instruments including the trumpet, the guitar, and the steel guitar. He was in a couple of country bands in Mass and one in Florida. He was a loving man, and had a big heart. He will truly be missed by many.

Some memories of her dad from Chrissy Chadwick.
I am very proud of my Dad. i know he risked his life as Sheriff. He loved his job.Protecting as he also protected us.
So many memories but the one I am so proud of is when my brother Pat got diagnosed with lung cancer. My Dad drove all the way from Florida to Massachusetts to be with us as we faced my brothers illness. My dad stayed the whole time until God took him home.He helped us to get through a very difficult time.We shared memories and many tears. We were a family again. This was the first time we were all together as a family for a long time.I missed that so much.I miss them both very much but I know they are in a much better place now. A place of Peace,Joy,Love and no more pain or tears. I will always have them in my heart and memories and cant wait to see them again one day.

Memories from Crystal
Pete loved to sail and he loved the water. He was in the Navy early on. He loved to help people. He had a big heart. Many times he would give his lunch money away(buy someone something to eat) as he felt they needed it much more than he.He had a very warm, loving, tender heart. He was the most generous person I have ever met in my life. He loved the lord. We prayed together, read the Word together.
I also remember Pete telling me that he wanted to be a policeman ever since he was a small child. It was his life's dream. His mother bought him a finger print kit and he would go all through the house lifting fingerprints from every surface. There was a height requirement to get on the force,Pete was short so he wore cowboy boots to appear taller.Carol has a story about a stretching exercise he did also to gain a little height.
Pete was an avid ham radio operator. He loved Morse code (CW). He spent many afternoons and evenings talking around the world. He was also a very talented steel guitar player. He started out playing country music. The Sheriff's Department had a band "Southern Justice".They were so good they could of gone professional. They played at state fairs, etc. We were both retired in February 2004, we moved to McAlpin and began searching for a church. After going to many in the area we came away feeling very unsatisfied and disappointed. After much prayer we were led to CLC Grace Lutheran in Live Oak. Pete began to feel in his heart he needed to start playing Gospel music (music for the Lord). He then started picking hymns out of the Hymnal and playing them.He truly loved the Lord and the church and was happy to serve in any way he could. I believe he was the financial secretary. He did readings in some of the services, also played the computer music music during the services along with Cheryl Davidson. He really enjoyed it.
Pete also loved cooking and baking. He enjoyed making sweet potato pie, apple crisp, beef stew, spaghetti sauce etc.He also enjoyed oil painting.
When he was born July 4, 1934, the nurses put Pete in the hospital bed with his mother. A thunderstorm came along and lightning came in the window struck the metal railing on the bed and traveled all along the railing. He was nicknamed the fire cracker baby.

There is an old saying "Anyone can be a father but it takes someone special to be a Dad."
You were not my biological father but you were my Dad. You were my rock, you were my hero. I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for you.
You were a such a special ,caring loving man. I will always be proud to call you my Dad..
I love you and I miss you so much. RIP Dad
