Richard Lappe Obituary

Richard A. Lappe Richard A. Lappe, 80, died March 11, 2006, at his home on Hutchinson Island. He was born in Washington, D.C., and wintered on Hutchinson Island for 20 years. He graduated from the Pennsylvania Maritime Academy in 1945 and served in the Merchant Marine and Naval Reserve. He earned his Master's license in 1950, was commissioned a Pennsylvaniz pilot for the Delaware River in 1954, and until his retirement in 1988, was an owner/ member of the Pilot's Association for The Bay and River Delaware. He served as trial trip master for Sun Ship Building and Dry Dock Co. (later PennShip), 1978-1984, and was test pilot for the ship simulator at the National Maritime Research Center at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y. He joined Rotary International in 1987, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow and president of the Newtown Square club. He was a corporator of Garrett-Williamson Foundation and past chairman of Marple Township Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed golf, tennis, and was a member of two antique car clubs. He was a member of Newtown Square Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Virginia Trimble Lappe; three daughters, Dianne Cooney of Lancaster, Pa., Sheryl Marsico of Exton, Pa., and Barbara McEvoy of Oaks, Pa.; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene Lappe. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Treasure Coast, 1201 S.E. Indian St., Stuart, FL 34997. SERVICES: Funeral services will be in Pennsylvania. A memorial service on Hutchinson Island will be conducted at a later date. Arrangements are by Frank C. Videon Funeral Home, Broomall, Pa.
