WILLIAM HAUKE Obituary

WILLIAM R. HAUKE, JR. William R. Hauke, Jr. passed away peacefully on April 1, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 1, 1936, son of the late William R. Hauke, Sr. and Ellinor Bean Hauke. He was raised in Burlington, graduated from Burlington High School in 1954, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1958 where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity. It was here that Bill met and married the love of his life, Carole Aherne. They were married July 2, 1961 at St. Theresa's Church in West Roxbury, MA. He then returned to Burlington to join his father and uncle in the family building business. Bill was devoted to providing affordable housing to Chittenden County until his retirement in 1989. He took great pride in helping hundreds of families achieve the American dream of homeownership. In addition to his business, he was very generous with his time, involving himself in many community activities. He was a Scout Master of Troop 50 in Burlington for 33 years and was able to instill his love of the outdoors and his passion to serve with so many. He served as a board member on the Burlington Department of Public Works as well as a Director for The National Association of Home Builders. Bill valued education and enjoyed contributing and being involved in fundraising for many local educational institutions. He also served as a Board member of Champlain College for 12 years. Bill and Carole enjoyed a lifetime of activities together. Bill had a passion for traveling and was fortunate to visit all 7 continents and shared many memorable vacations with his family. He was an avid hiker, completing both the Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail. Bill tried to pass on his love of hiking to his eleven grandchildren. Each year he would have 2 or 3 volunteer (or be dragged) to accompany him on his annual Mt. Washington excursion to spend a night at the Lake of the Clouds Hut (Adam - you're not off the hook). In addition, Bill and Carole were active square dancers for 48 years and enjoyed theater as well as attending UVM hockey games. Colchester Point held a special place in his heart, having spent over 70 summers on Lake Champlain. He knew every secret black raspberry spot on the Point. His summer camp provided many great memories for both family and friends. Bill's retirement to Florida in 1995 did not slow him down but afforded him even more time to devote to his volunteer activities including Hibiscus House, Elliot Museum, Kiwanis, and Habitat for Humanity as well as being chairman of the board of his condo association. Bill leaves many dear friends from his second fraternity, Miramar Royale. Bill's summers in Vermont allowed him the opportunity to enjoy watching his grandchildren in their sporting and school activities. Bill was a humble man, however we would be remiss in not mentioning his gracious philanthropic generosity. He and Carole cared deeply for their fellow Vermonters, participating fully in dozens of philanthropic causes, rolling up their sleeves and working hard and giving generously in Vermont, Florida and beyond. In recent years he was particularly proud of seeing the completion of the Island Line bike path and he and Carole donated the Local Motion bike ferry providing access to South Hero. Bill certainly left his mark on this world. He was a kind, compassionate, and loving man. He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Carole and their four children, David Hauke and his wife Anne, Steven Hauke and his wife Carol, Sandra Dickin, and Martha Bloom and her husband Matthew, 11 grandchildren, Peter, Eric, and Adam Hauke, Nathan, Alayna and Paige Hauke, Molly and Samuel Dickin and Amanda, Emily and Isabel Bloom. In addition, he is also survived by his sisters Lillian Venner and husband Bruce, and Margaret Lanzetta and husband John, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, his father and mother- in-law, George and Doris Aherne and granddaughter Olivia Hauke predeceased him. A special thank you to Dr. Ann LaCasce and the Oncology team at Dana-Farber who allowed Bill to keep his very active lifestyle despite having Leukemia for the past 8 years. Ironically Bill, Carole and the Paper Cranes Team devoted the past 11 years participating in the Jimmy Fund Walk (26.2 miles) and raising funds for cancer research. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at 10AM at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Burlington. Visiting hours will be on Monday, April 6, 2015, from 4 to 7PM at the Corbin & Palmer Funeral Chapel, 9 Pleasant St., Essex Junction, VT. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The Jimmy Fund Walk, ? Martha Bloom, 137 Barbara Terrace, Colchester, VT 05446. The Paper Cranes will dedicate their walk to Bill this year on September 27, 2015.

Thank you to Bill Hauke, Jr., his dad and his wife Carol. Many people including ourselves, were rewarded with his generosity, our first home, the Causeway, the new bike Ferry, among his many other generous contributions to the community. I know nothing can take away the pain in your hearts. Please know that your husband, dad, grandfather, made our world a better place. I would see him each year when he participated the annual fund raiser "Tour de Champlain". We will all miss him in 2015.

Charles Dickens wrote, And can it be that in a world so full and busy, the loss of one creature makes a void in any heart so wide and deep that nothing but the width and depth of eternity can fill it up! The death of Bill Hauke leaves that kind of a void. Bill was an extraordinary person, one of those whom no one can replace. He seemed to bring a sense of peace and serenity wherever he went and I was fortunate enough to experience that during the time we met. Know that my thoughts are with you as you happily recall your years together and yet cry through the heartache Bill's absence brings.

I was fortunate to spend a few hours with Bill in December when he stopped in to say hello at the Home Builders and Remodelers Association. Bill was a leader in the Association when I was a new member. I always respected his commitment to making housing affordable for young families even before 'affordable housing' was a coined expression. HBRANV extends its heartfelt condolences to his wife and family. Bill's leadership, integrity and passion will be sorely missed by any and all that knew him.

Bill, you were such an amazing man -- such an inspiration to me. I can't believe you've passed on. Over the 17 years I knew you, I was continually humbled by you -- your great love of friends and family, your deep community involvement in so many causes, and your honest down-to-earth spirit matched equally by your ongoing thirst for adventure. I expect that you are already training to walk marathons for great causes in heaven. Most Local Motion Bike Ferry seasons started with you waiting to board as our first passenger -- and your stories of riding the trains and living along the Island Line always left us wanting more. The Winooski River trail bridge, the Colchester-South Hero Causeway's rebirth and the Bike Ferry would not have happened without the support shared so graciously by you and Carole. Your many volunteer activities made our community a wonderful place for so many to enjoy and cherish. You will remain in my heart forever.

Bill instilled in me a love for the outdoors whether it be hiking or camping. He did this through his long time commitment to the boys of Troop 50 of which I was one. He was a great example all through his life; a mentor to many! I was, and am, proud to call him my friend. My thoughts are with you and the extended family, Carole.

Dearest Carole,

No word could ever express our sorrow. Some people come into our lives and leave footprint in our hearts; that is our beloved kind Bill who always was thinking of what he could do for others. We will remember his laughter and smiles. We can picture our Lord greeting him with open arms and Bill with his endless energy asking Our Father: What do you need me to do up here; I am ready to get to work for you.
Our sincerest sympathy to you and your family, Lorraine and Tom LaCroix

A penny a nail, that's what you paid my brother and I to find and straighten nails when we were kids. How we loved getting up early to the sound of power tools and hammering just to search for nails or any other task that you had in mind for us. You instilled hard working skills into us at an early age, you were a great inspiration to all who crossed your path.
Thank you for our home, from February 1966 until just last year we called it home, now another family is blessed by your humbleness.
RIP Mr. Hauke, may your family carry your memories close to their hearts, you will be missed.

Bill and Carol were my first landlords way back "in the day"! I later came to know them well when I worked at Champlain College and saw them often through the years. Together, they set the example for community involvement and generosity. What a legacy: family, friendship, a love of Vermont, our environment, and a dedication to causes they truly believed in. Not to mention the depth of love Bill felt for each member of his family and most especially for his beloved, Carol. A true Vermonter, through and through! I feel fortunate to have known Bill, and consider myself lucky to have made his acquaintance so many years ago. My thoughts are with the entire Hauke family.

Terri and I are very sorry to hear of Bill's passing. We were backyard neighbors with the Haukes in Burlington for 20 years, and our children went to school together.
Not only was Bill a great neighbor, but he was also one of Burlington's business leaders. Both Bill and Carol represent what is best about Burlington, and Vermont. They have been among the most generous members of our community.
RIP, Bill.
