WILLIAM VAN HERWARDE

WILLIAM VINCENT VAN HERWARDE William Van Herwarde died peacefully on April 23, 2013 at his residence in Vero Beach, Fl. William was born in Passaic, NJ and lived in Vero Beach for 7 years coming from Packanack Lake and Green Pond, NJ. He graduated from La Salle Military Academy in Long Island, enrolled at Manhattan College but was interrupted by WWII where he served in the US Navy. He then completed his Bachelors Degree at Manhattan College. Prior to retirement he was owner and president of the Van Herwarde Dairy in Passaic, NJ which his grandfather had established in 1880. He was a long time member of the Rotary Club of Passaic. He was an avid skier and tennis player and recently, in Florida, enjoyed golfing. Before moving to Vero Beach where he attended Holy Cross Catholic Church, he was a parishioner of St. Simon Church in Green Pond for 55 years in the summer and a member of the Green Pond Yacht Club which was a source of great enjoyment for the entire family and friends. Survivors include his wife of 60 years Dorothy; Son William and his wife Ellen and their children, Grania, Kara and Liam; daughter Carol and Patrick Gannon their children Christine, Jacqueline and Sean; daughter Joan and William Smith their children Katherine, Alexandra and Harrison; son Thomas and his companion Wendy Abma and his children Thomas and Jeremy; his sister Ann Sullivan and husband Donald and family. In lieu of flowers donations to the St. Joseph Home (Little sisters of the Poor) 140 Shepherd Lane Totowa, NJ 07512. Services: Visitation will be 3- 4PM, April 26, 2013 at Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach. A Prayer Service will follow at 4 PM. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial in June at St. Simons Church in Green Pond, NJ and Celebration of his life. Arrangements are by Strunk Funeral Home and Crematory , Vero Beach.
