Atherton Stinger Obituary
September 27, 1932 - July 21, 2025
Atherton (Ad) Stinger of Castle Rock died peacefully at home with his daughter Kathy at his side on July 21, 2025. He was born in Pocatello, Idaho to John and Anna (Gill) Stinger on September 27, 1932. His family ran a dairy farm in McCammon, Idaho until moving the family and the farm to Toledo, Washington in 1947 where he graduated from Toledo High School. He attended BYU studying Chemical Engineering and worked for Reynolds Metals from 1956 to 1989, eventually becoming a supervisor. After retiring, he worked for a few years as the maintenance manager at Top Foods and then as a tool manager for Acuren Inspection for several more years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and loved to travel. Ad was also an avid bowler and enjoyed the sport for many years. He married the love of his life, Verna Lea, in January 1981 and they spent many years going to the Baja and eventually bought property in San Felipe so they could fish and enjoy the local cuisine until her death in 2018. Holidays were special to him and Verna Lea, especially Christmas. They both loved having their children and grandchildren over for the festivities and everyone was invited. He loved to play bingo at the local Eagles and you could find him there winning twice a week. He is survived by his children, Brian Stinger of Rainier, Ore., Kevin (Kelly) Karnoski and Jeff (Connie) Karnoski all of Longview, Kathy (Tony) LaFave of Chino Valley, Ariz. and Kristen (Tommy) Stephens of Orlando, Fla; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; 11 siblings; a son, Kevin Stinger; a granddaughter, Sabrina Maine and his beloved wife, Verna Lea.
A memorial service will be held at Steele Chapel (Longview Memorial Park) at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 with private interment to follow. A Celebration of Life is planned on the same day at the Eagles in Castle Rock from 2 to 6 p.m. Food will be provided. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Eden Health Hospice of Vancouver or the charity of your choice.
