Barbara Sudar Obituary
Our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Barbara Jean (Askay) Sudar, went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 18, 2025, due to complications of Parkinson's Disease. She was born in LaCenter, WA on August 16, 1932, to Iva (Doney/Capps) and Fred Askay, the eldest of three daughters, Betty-Jo (Linder/Tompkins/Petty), Beverly (Olson), and half-brothers Paul and Glen Doney.
Barbara grew up in Longview, WA, attending Columbia Valley Gardens (CVG) Elementary School, where she met her life-long friend, Winnie (Clark). She then attended Kessler Junior High School, where she met her future husband, William (Bill) A. Sudar, in 8th grade. Barbara attended R.A. Long High School, graduating in 1950, along with friend Arlene (Hall).
Throughout her youth, Barbara enjoyed many adventures with her "sister" cousins, Joyce, Mary Ellen, Doris and Janet, along with her siblings, Beverly and Betty Jo, sleeping outside on cots and family travels or vacations. While Bill was enlisted in the Army, Barbara attended Lower Columbia College (LCC). They married on April 30th, 1955 at Longview Assembly of God Church. Barbara and Bill resided in Longview, WA, purchasing their first home on 34th Avenue, in September of 1955, living there for 9 years and raising children Teresa (Terri) and Michael (Mike). They eventually purchased a 110 acre farm on Stella Road, where they added son Martin (Marty) to the family. Barbara was proud to learn to "live off the land", gardening, canning and preserving foods from the orchards and mastering the process of supervising the summer hay crews on the proper way to stack hay on trucks, trailers and in the barns. Being married into the Yugoslavian Sudar clan, she learned how to make apple strudel, sauerkraut, and other traditional dishes. Throughout her life Barbara dedicated teaching her children all sorts of independent living skills, along with a strong work ethic. She also enjoyed filling in for vacationing office employees at Longview Fibre Company. Those clerical skills led to her being employed at Calvary Community Church, as a secretary, for several years. Barbara was also the hostess of numerous family reunions on both the Askay/Doney and Sudar/Naglich/Dragich sides of the family. She also enjoyed being a Secret Pal through the church, attending Adult Bible Camp at Black Lake, clamming at Long Beach, WA, and being a member of the Stella Historical Society. Barbara enjoyed collecting Christmas houses, green glass dishware, and Beanie Babies. Barbara was also an avid traveler, enjoying trips to the World's Fair Expo (Seattle, WA), Vancouver, BC, Israel, Universal Studios/Disneyland, Colorado and many trips to Cannon Beach.
Barbara is survived by daughter, Teresa (Lee) Moore; sons, Michael and Martin (Charmaine) Sudar; grandchildren, Nick (Dianna) Plotts, Jaime Thurston, Erin (Brad) Baldwin, Kim (Mark) Gayman, Sarah (James) Coalter, Matthew Sudar, and Hannah (Joey Carbajal) Sudar; great-grandchildren, Colin and Kielyn Thurston, Jordan and Avery Gayman, Landon and Emma Plotts, Gracie and Dawson Johnson and Mya Coalter, and many nieces and nephews.
A special thanks to Ka-Pamilya Adult Foster Home, Beaverton, OR for many years of loving care.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, September 27th, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Calvary Community Church, 2655 38th Ave, Longview WA.
