Evelyn Palmer Obituary

Evelyn (Evie) LaVerla Palmer

October 6, 1929 - May 19, 2025

Evelyn Palmer was born October 6, 1929, in Kalama, Wash., to Grover and Zelma Dickey. She passed away peacefully at her cabin, in her chair, watching her rivers go by, with her family by her side. Evie lived a full life and was 95 at her passing. Evelyn had three siblings, all deceased at her passing: Clista Vernard, Kenneth Dickey, and Alice Knokey.

Evie graduated from Kalama High School in 1947. She worked at the bakery in Kalama while in high school and then at the bank in town part-time for five years. During that time she married Fred Palmer on September 2, 1949, in a double wedding with her sister, Alice (Knokey). Fred and Evie spent almost 70 years together before his passing in 2017. Evie is survived by her three sons, Randy (Charlotte) The Dalles, Ore., Dale (Cindy) Lyle, Wash., and Ron (Kathy) Warrington, Ore. She also had five grand kids and five great-grand kids.

Evie was a very involved stay at home mom. We don't believe she ever missed one of her son's sporting events. If she did it was because two of them were playing at two different locations (gymnasiums or baseball fields) and her husband (Fred) went to the other location so one parent was always there to watch and cheer!

Evie served as president of the Amalak Club (Kalama Women's Club) for a period of time and was the secretary/treasurer of the Kalama Sportsmen's Club in the early years of the club. Evelyn was a Princess in the Woodland, Wash. Strawberry Festival during her senior year of high school (1947). Evie was a very avid golfer and a member of the ladies golf club at Lewis River Golf Course in Woodland, Wash. She didn't hit the ball far, but consistently hit the ball right down the middle of the fairway! Evie was known for her desserts. She had a delicious sugar cookie recipe from her mom, a scrumptious bread pudding recipe from her dad, and generally had some of those, or cakes, pies, or other cookies around the house if visitors came around. Evie was also an avid "texter". Every morning she could be found texting her sister Alice, and the two would text each other constantly throughout the day! It was pretty amazing how a 95 year old woman could master texting!

Evie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be missed by many.

What a lovely welcoming neighbor she was at the Sportman Club. Glad to know her and Fred are together again. Not many women like her anymore!

My friendship with Evie and Fred goes back 30+ years. We became friends through golf and shard many good times together. She used to tease me, saying she "was old enough to be my mom" but instead she was a dear and loving friend. I will miss her dearly.
